Isaac Asimov

Thinking is the activity I love best, and writing to me is simply thinking through my fingers. I can write up to 18 hours a day. Typing 90 words a minute, I’ve done better than 50 pages a day. Nothing interferes with my concentration. You could put on an orgy in my office and I wouldn’t look up – well, maybe once.

Isaac Asimov

Isaac Asimov ( born Isaak Yudovich Ozimov; c. January 2, 1920 – April 6, 1992) was an American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Asimov was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited more than 500 books and an estimated 90,000 letters and postcards. His books have been published in nine out of ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Isaac Asimov wrote a few novels and short stories which featured robots and so he formulated the Three Laws of Robotics. The laws are so brilliant that other Sci-Fi writers have used the laws.

The Three Laws of Robotics (often shortened to The Three Laws or Three Laws) are a set of rules introduced in Asimov 1942 short story “Runaround”, although they had been foreshadowed in a few earlier stories. The Three Laws are:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

And the Zeroth Law:

0. A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

“When I feel difficulty coming on, I switch to another book I’m writing. When I get back to the problem, my unconscious has solved it.
