TUPIG – Ilocano Dessert


While growing up in Marag, Luna, Kalinga Apayao, Philippines, it was customary that when a relative or a friend cooks something special, he has to make sure that every one of his friends and his relatives within walking distance get to partake some of what he cooked. 😉  Otherwise, he will upset those who do not get to taste the food. hahaha

We are lucky that most of our relatives cooked sumptuous food and each has a specialty.

My Manong Andoy married to my cousin, Manang Linda cooked an awesome recipe of tupig.  I have not forgotten it so when I last saw him, I requested for the tupig, which he cooked.  He was always been the kindest relative there is.

TUPIG – Ilocano Dessert


2 cups glutinous rice flour
1 cup shredded coconut
3/4 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup brown sugar
banana leaves cut to 3″ in width for wrapping


Combine all ingredients (except the banana leaves) and mix to form a dough. Put a tablespoonful of dough in a banana leaf; spread evenly and wrap. Immediately place in a charcoal or any grill once you wrap one, cook by turning frequently. Once the banana leaf is charred on all sides remove it from the grill then set aside to cool before serving.
