O Naraniag Nga Bulan (Oh! Bright Moon)

I absolutely love this Ilocano folksong O Naranyag Nga Bulan.  It is my favourite Ilocano song ever.

It is about a wish to the moon to shine on one’s life.

The person has troubles with his lovelife.  His  life has gone so unbelievably dark; so sad.  His world is so black, very bleak, that he can’t see his way through it.

This person is at the end of his tether. Suicidal in fact, that he was begging the moon to grant his wish with immediate effect as he was so bereft of any happiness and hope.  Death is becoming rather appealing; his only way out in fact. 🙁 🙁 🙁

(OMG, no one is ever worth dying for!!!)

The song is so nostalgic for me, not because of the rather twee meaning of the lyrics, LOL, but because we used to sing it as children when we would be allowed to play for a few minutes outside in the garden when there was a full moon.  This was in Marag, a small barrio in the northern part of the Philippines.

Our view of the moon in our barrio was so amazing as there were no huge or tall buildings to obscure the full effect of a full moon and no pollution either as our barrio was a valley surrounded by virgin mountains.

Anyway the full view of the moon was really beautiful and we would  sing O Naranyag Nga Bulan without being prompted!   You just have to sing it as a homage.  There were also fireflies that would lit trees giving our surrounding a fairyland atmosphere.  It was so perfect, I’ve always thought and been grateful that I had this kind of happy childhood.  I would not exchange it for anything.

I remember reading that the late Patrick Moore said that the view of the moon from the Phillipines was beautiful.  Patrick Moore was a British icon, a self-taught amateur Astronomer and became expert on the moon.  His work on moon mapping was used by NASA as well as the Russian Space Agency.

Lyrics

O naraniag a bulan
Un-unnoyko indengam
Dayta naslag a silawmo
Dika kad ipaidam
O naraniag a bulan
Sangsangitko indengam
Toy nasipnget a lubongko
Inka kad silawan
Tapno diak mayyaw-awan

No inka nanglipaten
Karim kaniak nagibusen
Samsam-itek ni patay
O bulan ket aklunem
Nanglaylay ti ayatko
Inka kadin palasbangen
Un-unnoyko, darasem nga ikeddeng

No inka nanglipaten
Karim kaniak naumagen
Samsam-itek ni patay
O bulan ket aklunem
Nanglaylay ti ayatko
Inka kadin palasbangen
Un-unnoyko, darasem nga ikeddeng
Un-unnoyko, darasem nga ikeddeng
