March Goddess: Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley is a GlobalGranary’s firm favourite.  We think that she is a very talented young lady, very forthright, very intelligent, very chic and classy   – a true English Rose.  We first got to know her when she stole the show from Parminder Nagra, the lead in Bend it like Beckham.  We fell in love with the tomboyish Keira in that film.

Keira has become a proper and true A-lister with films and movies bulging in her portfolio.

Keira seems a very down to earth girl.  It was recently announced that Keira, despite her millions, gives herself a salary of £30,000 a year, thereby not make her friends feel uneasy in her company.  What a girl!

Keira is an appropriate icon for the coming spring.  Aww look, she has some photos wearing green… 😉 Spring!

“Be happy in your body. It’s the only one you’ve got, so you might as well like it.”
– Keira Knightley

Did you know?

Our beautiful Keira Knightley did not use to have a television?  Apparently she was so busy flying from one place to another that she did not really have time to watch the box, ergo no point in buying a television.  Very fair, we should think but apparently our Keira was hounded by the TV licence people.  They chased her to pay for the licence.

The latest though is that Keira finally bought a telly for the sake of her favourite football man, Gary Neville.  Apparently, Keira is an avid footie fan and she realised that there comes a point when watching the beautiful game in one’s laptop does not suffice anymore.  Yippeee Keira has now officially joined the likes of us who pay ridiculous amount for a TV Licence.

Kate Moss @ 40

The longevity of Kate Moss’s career is astounding. She is not particularly tall to be the ideal supermodel nor the most beautiful and yet most of the supermodels she started with have now been “retired” but Kate is still going from strength to strength.

She is still a regular cover of magazines, she is as visible as ever in any party circuit, she is still a favourite muse on music videos.

Kate has a checkered past but she seems to have a teflon ability. No matter how heinous and destructive the gossips are about her or what is actually happening to her, Kate just gets up and dusts herself off and away she goes again as if nothing much had happen.

Kate is uber-cool, her waif-like beauty is so beguiling.

At 40, Kate still got it, whatever “it” is. She is Playboy magazine’s 60 years anniversary cover and it seems they made the right choice. Kate is simply stunning.

GlobalGranary wishes Kate Moss a Happy 40th!!!

Marge Simpson The Fashion Icon

Beckham
I have never seen Marge looked more elegant. The Victoria couture is just the perfect fit for the long suffering Marge Simpson.

To Victoria, you have really made it now. Having Marge model you design is better than any awards!

Viva Victoria!!!

I have always had a soft spot for Victoria even during the Spice Girls’ days. She was my favourite.

But she had come a lonnnngg lonng way form those days. Our Victoria is a very successful and much sought after fashion designer these days. This is not one of those flukes but for real. She is hardworking and artistic. You see her vision on every piece of her design. Victoria is now a well respected and multi-awarded fashion designer and fashion icon.

Supermodels of All Time

I never cared for fashion much, amusing little seams and witty little pleats: it was the girls I liked.
– David Bailey (Iconic British photographer)

Models are an integral part of the clothing industry.

They are very thin, very tall with exceptionally beautiful faces, even the androgynous looking ones.   Us, mere mortals who do not have legs up to our armpits aspire to be them, like them.  We buy our glossy magazine to ogle and sigh over their photographs, promising ourself not to have an extra portion of chips, not to have anymore glasses of riesling, forego that chocolate cake or  join the gym and optimistically hope we might be able to look like Miranda Kerr or Naomi Campbell,  which is chance to be a fine thing. 😉

One good thing that came into our consciousness, is that supermodels are not so super after all.  Even these perfect beings are not so perfect.  The magazine and catalogue industry widely use Photoshop to get rid of any hidden extra fat, the minutest of blemishes and any hint of imperfection.

These beautiful creatures do not have perfect lives either, they are  just like most of us.  They are not always dressed in couture, partying in all hours and hobnobbing with other celebrities. They are stressed as well, they are continuously and constantly worried that they are not that young anymore, not that beautiful anymore, not that sought after anymore, what the current trend needs anymore.  Modelling is a fleeting career, which life span is getting shorter and shorter because pretty and prettier girls are aplenty waiting on the sideline for their turn in the limelight.

The rise of the supermodel was coined in the 80s as answer to the popular culture.  They are highly paid models who as Linda Evangelista once said “We don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day,”.  Supermodels are different from other models because they have a reputation around the world having graced the covers of countless magazines.  They have multimillion dollars worth of endorsement and campaign often specially created to be a supermodel’s signature brand.  A haute couture catwalk show relies on these clothes horses to gallop and saunter their latest design on the runway.

Here are my choice of the  best models and supermodels of all time:

Linda Evangelista was born in Canada in 1965 to a strict Catholic household.  Apparently she was not allowed to date until she turned 19.  Linda is not only beyond belief beautiful but was an A student as well.  But even early on her passion for fashion was apparent.  She was 16 years old, when she entered Miss Teen Niagara.  She did not win the title but won admiration from an Elite talent scout.  Due to her strict Catholic background it took another couple of years for Linda to enter the modelling world… and the rest is history.

Lauren Hutton became a top American fashion model, cover girl (appearing on the cover of American Vogue a record 26 times), and commercial spokesperson. She was advised to correct the slight gap in her teeth and tried using morticians’ wax to cover the gap, cutting a line in the middle of it. Then she used a cap, which she would often swallow, laugh out, or misplace.  She retained this ‘imperfection,’ which gave her on-camera persona a down-home sensibility that other, “more ethereal models lacked.  In her heyday, Hutton was known as “the fresh American face of fashion. – Wikipedia

Kate Moss (born 16 January 1974) is an English model who rose to fame in the early 1990s as part of the heroine chic fashion trend. She is known for her waifish figure, and role in size zero fashion. She is also noted for her controversial private life, high-profile relationships, party lifestyle, and drug use. In 2007, TIME magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2012, she came second on the Forbes top-earning models list, estimated to have earned $9.2 million in one year. Aside from modelling, Moss has embarked on numerous ventures, both fashion related and non-fashion related, which include her own clothing line and involvement in musical projects. – Wikipedia

Twiggy  was initially known for her thin build (thus her nickname) and her androgynous look consisting of large eyes, long eyelashes, and short hair.

Twiggy, born Lesley Hornby on 19 September 1949, is an English model, actress and singer. In the mid-1960s she became a prominent British teenage model of swinging sixties London.

In 1966, she was named “The Face of 1966” by the Daily Express and voted British Woman of the Year.

By 1967, Twiggy had modelled in France, Japan, and the U.S., and landed on the covers of “Vogue” and Tatler. Her fame had spread worldwide.

Cynthia Ann “Cindy” Crawford (born February 20, 1966) is an American model. Crawford is known for her trademark mole just above her lip, and has adorned hundreds of magazine covers throughout her career. Her success at modeling made her an international celebrity that has led to roles in television and film, and to work as a spokesperson. In 1995, Forbes magazine named her the highest paid model on the planet.

She was discovered at the age of 16 by a newspaper photographer who noticed her at work during her summer job of corn and took a picture of her. The photo and positive feedback she received were enough to convince her to take up modeling. She entered the Elite Model Management’s Look of the Year contest at 17 and was the runner-up. The Elite modeling agency in Chicago then started representing her.

Crawford graduated from DeKalb High School in 1984, as valedictorian. She won an academic scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, which she attended for only one quarter. She dropped out in order to pursue a full-time modeling career.

Naomi Campbell (born 22 May 1970) is an English model. Discovered at the age of 15, she established herself among the top three most recognizable and in-demand models of the late 1980s and 1990s, and she was one of six models of her generation declared “supermodels” by the fashion world.  Her personal life is widely reported, particularly her relationships with prominent men. (Wikipedia)

Naomi also became known, I am afraid, for her volatility  which garnered her several assault convictions.

Naomi is the supermodel with attitude.

Another Jean here, Jean Patchett was a model from 1948 to 1963. During her heyday she was often called legendary, the most recognisable face in American fashion couture and possibly the most prolific. She was a regular cover of all the glossy magazines. The frequency of her appearance in magazine was astounding that she was more or less the center of the fashion photography and had been referred to as the Queen of Fashion Inc.

Dorian Leigh

Dorian Leigh (April 23, 1917 – July 7, 2008), born Dorian Elizabeth Leigh Parker, was an American model and one of the earliest modelling icons of the fashion industry. She is considered one of the first supermodels and was well known in the United States and Europe.

Dorian Leigh was her modelling name because her parents thought that modelling was not respectable. LOL They certainly changed their tune when Dorian’s youngest sister, Suzy Parker, became a model too.

Anyway Dorian was pretty special as she was below the average modelling height. She was only 5’5″ but she had very eye-catching zigzag eyebrows (?) and of course the camera loved her!

Carmen Dell’Orefice
(born June 3, 1931) is an American model and actress, born in New York, NY. She is known within the fashion industry for being the world’s oldest working model as of the Spring/Summer 2012 season. She was on the cover of Vogue at the age of 15 and has been modelling ever since.
It seems Carmen gets more beautiful the older she got. What a lucky woman. It is those cheekbones. They are to die for. She is so elegant, she is elegance from the top of her head to the tip of her toes.

Twiggy – 60s Fashion Icon

Twiggy is the very first supermodel that I can remember as far back as the 60s.

I suppose what I remember about her most was the hairstyle she made so iconic that it ruled the world for a while. 😉  As far back as the Philippines.  My mother used to always take my sister and I to the hairdressers insisting that we get the Twiggy haircuts. I think every young girl then had a Twiggy haircut.

60s’ Twiggy was more than clothes, she was the 60s swinging London, she was London;  she was a living work of art as can be seen by these photos.

The Elizabeth Taylor Jewellery Collection!

Elizabeth Taylor‘s storied jewellery up for auction

By Bob Tourtellotte | Reuters – 13 hours ago

By Chris Michaud
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Actress Elizabeth Taylor’s world-renowned collection of jewellery will be auctioned off in December at a two-day sale that is expected to realise more than $30 million (18.7 million pounds), Christie’s said on Wednesday.

The December 13-14 sale will follow a global three-month tour that will also include Taylor’s couture, fine art and memorabilia, and will be the first of a series of auctions from the estate of the legendary film star who died in March.

Some 269 diamonds, pearls, rubies, rings, necklaces and even a tiara will be sold, with several of the most valuable, and storied pieces tied to Taylor’s lengthy and complicated relationship with Richard Burton, whom she married twice and divorced twice.

“This is without a doubt the greatest private collection of jewellery ever assembled in one place,” said Christie’s Americas chairman and president Marc Porter.

The collection includes everything “from her most jaw-dropping diamonds, gems and one-of-a-kind historic jewels to … never-before-seen keepsakes,” he said.

Leading the December 13 gala evening sale of 89 top lots is Taylor’s iconic, 33.19-carat white diamond ring, a 1968 gift from Burton who purchased it at auction for $300,000.
The trustees of Taylor’s estate have renamed it The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond, and it is estimated to fetch $2.5 million to $3.5 million.

But prices for items from the collections of other famous people ranging from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Marilyn Monroe to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor have soared to many times their pre-sale estimates.

EYE FOR QUALITY
Taylor’s fame, as well as her eye for quality are expected to drive interest, and boost prices.
“It is her depth of knowledge about fine jewellery that truly impresses,” Christie’s’ international jewellery director Francois Curiel said. “It was clear that she possessed an expert’s eye for craftsmanship, rarity, quality and history. She collected the best pieces from the best periods.”

Among the most historic pieces is a 203-grain (equivalent to 55 carat) pear-shaped 14th-century pearl once owned by England’s Mary Tudor, and later passed on to Spanish queens Margarita and Isabel.

Burton bought it in 1969 at auction for $37,000, and Taylor commissioned Cartier to design a new ruby-and-diamond necklace mount. It is estimated to sell for $2 million to $3 million.

At the other end of the spectrum, bidders will have a chance at Taylor’s two, diamond-set wedding bands from her marriages to Burton, estimated at only $6,000 to $8,000.

From Mike Todd, another of Taylor’s seven husbands, there is an antique diamond tiara which the star wore to the 1957 Academy Awards at which Todd’s “Around the World in 80 Days” won best picture. It is estimated at $60,000 to $80,000.
Taylor’s estate was valued at anywhere from $500 million to $1 billion at the time of her death from congestive heart failure on March 23, age 79.

In keeping with Taylor’s humanitarian work, a portion of the proceeds from exhibitions, events and publications related to the auction will be donated to The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, which the actress founded in 1991.
The series of Taylor sales are individually devoted to jewellery, haute couture, fashion and accessories, decorative arts and memorabilia from Taylor’s Bel Air home, and Impressionist and modern art.

The New York sales will be preceded by a 10-day exhibition of her collection beginning on December 3. The world tour starts in Moscow on September 15.
