Life Prescription: Be Thyself, Know thyself, Love Thyself

Your capacity to love others depends entirely on your capacity to love yourself and take care of yourself.
– Thich Nhat Hanh

I love this quote by Thich Nhat Hanh. I have heard and even read it somewhere before that it is important to love yourself first before you can love another.

I think this is really elementary. You cannot or shouldn’t really love anyone more than you love yourself. Your life is your own and you must try to look after it and not let your happiness be dependent on others, otherwise, your life is always on a balancing act; forever standing on a precipice. You have one life to live and live you must.

Put yourself first before others, it is a  life prescription, because only then that you can truly give yourself fully to others.

Jennifer Lopez had just written a book about loving oneself.  Based on the interviews she was giving left right and centre about learning to love herself, she made so much sense.  Currently, she said, she is alone and she was enjoying being alone, just completely reliant on herself for her happiness.

Anyway below are some more quotes from those who have a way with words:

Be patient, love yourself, and miracles will happen.
Christina Caldwell
Do your own work and know yourself.
– Plato
Even though you don’t know who you are, you accept yourself. That is “you” in its truest sense.
– Shunryu Suzuki
It is imperative to base your life on yourself, to take responsibility for your own happiness.
– Josei Toda
In this life of ours, others may help us, may support us for a moment when we are fallen, may seek to awaken us to our own true nature, but realization must come from within.
– Paramananda
It is from the bottom of your heart that you react when you see someone crying, laughing or frightened.
– Chogyam Trungpa
Let honesty be as the breath of thy soul.
– Benjamin Franklin

It is the self that creates life, and it is life that makes the self what it is.
– Dogen Zenji

One can only know the best of oneself through awareness of the best of other people.
– Francois Cheng

Our way is to go step by step, appreciating our everyday life.  Then we can see what we are doing and where we are.
– Shunryu Suzuki
To Thine own self be true.
– William Shakespeare
The first and worst of all frauds is to cheat One’s self.
– Philip James Bailey

There is only one real failure in life that is possible, and that is, not to be true to the best one knows.
– Frederic William Farrar

Think positively about yourself…. ask God who made you to keep on remaking you.

Only in the present do things happen.
– Gorge Luis Borjes

Love this quote.  What it means to me it that there is no point worrying about the past or even the future because it is in the present that things occur.

Wisdom’s Looking Glass

All things that pass
Are Wisdom’s looking-glass
– Christina Rossetti

Thought of the Day

The above quote by my favourite English poet, Christina Rossetti really appeals to me.

I think it means that what has passed should be a way of learning curve for the future.  We should gain wisdom from what has happened to deal with what is happening as well as what has yet to come.

The past is a mirror of understanding, knowledge and experience.

However there are instances that we refuse to learn from mistakes, thus continue to make the same mistakes!

Anticipation vs Procrastination

Thought for the Day

Anticipate things that are difficult while they are easy, and does things that would become great while they are small.  All difficult things in the world are sure to arise from a previous state in which they are easy, and all great things from one in which they were small.  Therefore the sage, while he never does what is great, is able on that account to accomplish the greatest things.

Leo Tolstoy

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (9 September 1828 – 20 November 1910), also known as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russianwriter, philosopher and political thinker who primarily wrote novels and short stories.

Today is Leo Tolstoy’s 186th birth anniversary.
(9 Sept 2014)

Tolstoy’s War and Peace is such a long read that it has entered the dictionary to mean, something long and laborious to read.

But having said that War and Peace is a true classic for everyone’s bucket list (book to read before dying). 😉

I always write in the morning.  In the morning one’s head is particularly fresh.

Leo Tolstoy Philosophy

Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.

– Leo Tolstoy
It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness.
~Leo Tolstoy

No one who has not sat in prison knows what the State is like.
– Leo Tolstoy

When you feel the desire for power, you should stay in solitude for some time.
