Episode 1

The test whether a drama is good or not is the ability for it to engage your attention and beguile you into continuing into the next episode.

This drama has done that for me but I have to pause to write this quick summary.

Luo Yi Ning returned to the Capital to attend her grandma Old Madam Luo’s, 60th birthday banquet.  Despite being a legitimate daughter, she had been confined to the side yard when she earned the wrath of Madam Qiao, her father’s favourite concubine.

Madam Qiao wanted everything to go on her way and plotted for feisty Yi NIng to be banished from the main Luo Residence.  She made it appear that Yi NIng pushed her which resulted in miscarrying the first male child of the Luo Family.

Anyway, Yi Ning had gotten used to the side yard and preferred the peace and quiet, away from the complexities and disharmonies at the Luo Residence.

She had been away for ten years and decided to return to the side yard after the celebration.  She was ambushed by Li Yinglong as she travelled into the Capital.  She was saved by a masked Luo Shen Yuan.

It was quite frenetic at the Luo Residence with the elite, noble and rich families invited to the banquet.  Madam Qiao tried to be the centre of attention as the main consort to Luo Cheng Zhang but Lin Hao Ru and Chen Lan were no pushover as secondary and main wives.

Lin Hao Ru stands as Yi NIng’s mother.  Yining’s biological mother, Mother Gu had already passaway.

Anyway, one of the guest was the rich Madam Jiang who broached the subject of cancelling the brothrotal between the Luo Clan and the Jiang Family.

Madam Qiao was perturbed about it was she wanted Yilian, her daughter, to marry into the rich Jiang Family.

Madam Jiang was impressed as soon as she saw the calm, gentle and as cute as a button Yi Ning.

She got more interested when Yi NIng saved her from a defective firework.  Madam Qiao set up Yi ning for the firework but Yilian unknowingly grabbed the firework from Yi Ning and lit it and it went all wrong, thus ending the party.

The Luo family had a family meeting where Yilian was scolded mildy and yet when Yi NIng intervened when Cheng Zhang punished the mysterious ‘son’ Luo Shen Yuan for being in the party, she too was sent to kneel at the ancestral hall for three days.

Yi NIng assumed that Luo Shen Yuan was her brother.

Luo Shen Yuan thought that Yi NIng had not recognised him.

Episode 2

Love it.  It reminds me of The Story of Minglan.  It has the feel of it.  I have to say Ren Min is really looking good in this drama.  She is gorgeous in fact.

Luo Shen Yuan realised that Yi Ning was very intuitive and very clever.  She was!  She immediately realised that there was something suspicious about Shenyuan.  Not only because he was treated like a pariah at the Luo Residence but he was asking too many questions about their grandfather’s painting.

Yining became curious about him and asked Old Madam Luo why Cheng Zhang treated Luo Shen Yuan abominably from his other children.

Madam Luo said that Shenyuan was Yining’s third brother who is a product of a drunken liaison  between her father and a chamber pot maid.  Her father was disgusted that the maid became pregnant and gave birth to a child.  He tried to banish Shenyuan but could not really managed it as it would tarnish the Luo Family’s reputation for abandoning one of their own.  Instead he punished Shenyuan by not including him in the family registry.

Meanwhile, Madam Qiao managed to convince Cheng Zheng to accept the proposal of downgrading Yining as a legal wife into a concubine to the Jiang Family.

When Old Madam Luo heard about it, she lapsed into a coma from the shock as she could not accept that her beloved legitimate granddaughter was demoted into concubinage.  This is also a form of contempt to the Luo Family.

Episode 3

It turned out that Yilian, the apple of Cheng Zheng’s eye was secretly dating Master Jiang. But Yilian with her mother, Madam Qiao had higher expectations.  She does not want to be a concubine so Yilian plotted to get Yining into a compromising position at the restobar with some guy. She sent a message to their father to catch Yining in the act but instead, Yilian was the one who got busted as Yining messaged Master Jiang to meet Yilian as the adjacent room inside the restobar.  Their father was a witness to the scandalous meet-up of Yilian with Master Jiang.

Yining managed to make their father promise to cancel the engagement to the Jiangs.

Meanwhile, Yining with her nominal mother, Madam Lin successfully investigated the part of Madam Qiao with the collapse of Old Madam Luo.

As a punishment, Madam Qiao was confined to her villa for a month and had to surrender the running of the Luo residence back to the gleeful Madam Lin.

Luo Shen Yuan is a part of an underground investigation agency.  He was searching for a statement secretly hidden, he thought, from the painitng of Grandpa Luo which he reckoned was gifted to Yining by Old Madam Luo.

Episode 4

Luo Shen Yuan and Shao An, his assistant, noticed a maid putting powder on the incense burner of Yining.  Shen Yuan ordered his assistant to investigate.  He was able to secretly take the powder pouch from the maid which they found contained itching powder.

Shen Yuan told Shao An to leave the pouch somewhere where Yining could find it.

Luo Shen Yuan almost got caught by Yining when she returned unexpected while he was searching for the painting in her apartment.

Yining knew that someone was still in her apartment so she spread incence flour on the floor to get the size of footstep of the intruder.

She was successful and went to visit Shenyuan at his Jimo House to try and find out if his footstep matches with the one left by the intruder.

It matched but then it was not conclusive because there are other four men who had the same foot size.🥹

The itching powder came in handy to deal with Madam Qiao who had been let out from her house arrest by Luo Chengzhang.

Yining connived with Madam Lin to curtain the power of Madam Qiao but implicating them to the powder incident and being accountable to missing monies from their family coppers.

For once, Chengzhang could not do anything as Madam Lin had become really feisty and powerful under the influence of Yining.

Episode 5

Yining finally recalled Shenyuan from her childhood memory.  It was her who caused Shenyuan permanently hurting his arm.  When they were children, Yining ordered Shenyuan to get her the ripest fruit at the hight branch of a tree.  He fell and hurt his arm.

Feeling so guilty, Yining took the boxes of grandpa’s painting to let Shenyuan study them.

Unfortunately Chengzhang turned up and confiscated the scrolls.
