Episode 1

I must say based from this first episode, this drama is showing a lot of potential.  Good story and Esther Yu is really good.  Very watchable.

Anyway, it started with a mother preparing her daughter for marriage to the very powerful Gong Family.

But then, all of a sudden a couple of intruders came barging in and before the mother and daughter knew what hit them, they were both unconscious.

The intruders were from Wufeng, which is an assassin organisation.  They were good martial artists who have defeated most of the families and clans.  The only family that had not succumbed to the Wufeng’s annihilation was the Gong Family.

Parents were happy to marry their daughters to the Gong because only then that they can be assured of their daughters’ safety.

The Gong family were from Jiuchen Valley.  They are an independent sect which does not conform to the rules of the martial art world. The Gong comprise of four legitimate lineage but they have chosen to adopt the Gong surname.

Each of the lineage has their specialty which they bring in to the Gong Family.  The four branches of the Gong are Shang, Jue, Zhi and Yu.  The Zhi are poison experts. The Shang are weapon masters.  The Jue are the moneymakers, they are in charge of business to the outside world. while the Yu are the one in charge of the Gong Family security.

The running and protection of the Gong at Jiuchen Valley is like a well oiled machine.  It was almost impossible for outside to penetrate the heart of the Gong County.

So the Wufeng used every subterfuge that was available.  The Bride selection is the ideal time to get into the Gong.

The intruders were Han Ya Si and a young girl.  Yasi started training the girl to replace the bride they had just incapacitated.

Ya Si gave the girl a new name which he told her that she must always remember.  She will be Yun Wei Shan with a backstory of being the only daughter of a rich and powerful merchant form Lixi Town who became destitute.🤣

Yasi told Yun Wei Shan that she must get selected as the bride, otherwise she will be killed either by the Gong or Wufeng. But she will be dead.  But if she completes her mission, she is free to leave Wufeng and live the life she always wanted.

Wei Shan trained very hard, even blindfolded to get every move right and be natural.  She must look like a real noble.  Wei Shan wanted to know what the criteria for the bride selection.

Ya Si told her that the Gong does not care for wealth, beauty or even prowess for martial for the bride.  All they care about is the continuation of their bloodline so the bride must be healthy, with childbearing hips, etc. 🤣

It was a particularly hectic time at Jiuchen but the young master Gong Xi Yu was in a brothel with his favourite courtesan.  He always run to her when he was feeling stress.  Her singing somehow calms him down.

Anyway, Gong Xi Yu had been a sickly child so his father, the Sword Wielder, look down on him and often dismiss him without second thought.  But this time Gong Xi Yu barged in to speak to his older brother about the intel he got from a dying Gong soldier.

The soldier’s last word was that a bride from the Wufeng was among the candidates.

Without any qualms, the Sword wielder, order that all the brides are to be executed.

Gong Xi Yu was aghast.  So he planned to save the brides but he came face to face with Gong Poison Master who prevented the brides from escaping.

Highlght: Yun Wei Shan remembering battling and mud wrestling with other girls to survive and belong to Wufeng.

Episode 2

I have to say that Gong Yuan Zhi, the poison expert guy, is very charismatic.

Yuan Zhi fought hard against both Xi Yu and Jin Fan despite Xi Yu assuring him that he was not really letting the brides escape.

Yuan Zhi was determined to kill the brides if there was a chance that it had been infiltrated by Wufeng.

Whoa, there are at least three Wufeng brides: Yun Wei Shan, Shangguan Qian and Zheng Nan Yi who was sent as a bride candidate to specially protect Shangguan Qian.

Zheng Nan Yi was caught and was being tortured. Gong Yuan Zhi with his baby face was so sadistic.  When Zheng Nan Yi refused his concoction of poison wine, he told her she does not have to.  He poured it instead on her chest.  The poison was as corrosive as acid.

The brides had been detoxified and were given Baiszhi Jincao Tea to ensure they remain fecund despite the miasma that sometimes appears at JiuChen Valley.

Xi Yu confirmed with Jin Fan that the smell of the Baizhi Jincao Tea was different than usual.  The two agreed that it has been poisoned by non other than Gong Yuan Zhi.

Gong Yuan Yu, Xi Yu’s elder brother visited him and teased him that he knew that Xi Yu had visited the Lady’s Hostel to see Yun Wei Shan.  Yuan Yu assured his young brother than he will not choose Yun Wei Shan for his bride.  Leave her to Xi Yu.

Xiyu got very upset when he found out that he was a pawn all along.  The Sword Wielder used his softheartedness and love of women to smoke out the Wufeng bride.

So many twists and turns and it is only the second episode.

Anyway, Gong Shang Jue turned up for the bride selection.  He recommend a daughter of his friend.  But it turned out the daughter was Zheng Nan Yi who was currently in the dungeon for being the Wufeng bride.

Gong Shang Jue left the Capital once again.

Meanwhile, it was the day for the bride selection.  The top two who both got the gold token were Yun Wei Shan and Miss Jiang.

When Gong Huan Yu turned up, he promised Xi Yu, he did not choose Yun Wei Shan but went for Miss Jiang instead.

This of course created a major problem for Yun Wei Shan.  She cannot afford not be the bride.

Later that evening, instead of a wedding, there was a death at the Gong.

Did Yun Wei Shan kill Miss Jiang?

Episode 3

No!

Whoa!  The Sword Wielder and Gong Huan Yu were killed by unknown assassins, through poisoning.

Yun Wei Shan became a suspect but Shangguan Qian covered for her.

Gong Xi Yu was absolutely shocked to learn the death of his nearest and dearest, i.e. father and brother.   He got even more aghast to find that he was to be elevated as the new Sword Wielder.

This happened because he was in the time at the right place as willed by the Gong’s Absence Inheritor law.

Gong Yuan Zhi was absolutely livid with Xi Yu becoming the Sword Wielder because his brother Gong Shang Jue was the most deserving of the title of Sword Wielder.  Unfortunately for him, he was nowhere in sight as he had left the valley.

Tearful, Xi Yu started the ritual in front of the Gong elders.  First he had to drink the blood of his dead father as some sort of continuation.  Then he was tattooed just like his father. The Elder explained that being tattooed would mean he can’t ever leave Jiuchen Valley.  He will be the living protector of the valley.  He will live and die in the valley.

I have to mention that though Esther Yu is doing a great job as Yun Wei Shan (her balletic fighting scene is spectacular), the actress Lu Yu Xiao shone as Shangguan Qian.  Every nuance of her facial expression is so effective.  Her acting is at time overpowering Esther’s, thus she is a real Mei to Esther’s Chi.

Mei is a senior to a chi in Wufeng female assassins’ hierarchy.

The death of Xi Yu’s father and brother became so convoluted and complicated. Everyone is a suspect, even Madam Wu, who was the current wife of the old Sword Wielder,  She was the first one to find the bodies of Gong Hong Yu (father), Gong Huan Yu (brother) and Zheng Nan Yi and yet she did not raise the alarm immediately.

Zheng Nan Yi was officially blamed for the death of the father and son through poisoning but Xi Yu does not accept it because Zheng Nan Yi was not good enough a martial artist to defeat both his father and brother.

Then there was Gong Yuan Zhi.  He was so expert in poison and had been feeding his father and brother with all kinds of herbs everyday for anti-poisoning and yet they still died of poisoining.

Xi Yu was also trying to eliminate Gong Shang Jue from his suspect.  Why did he leave the valley so suddenly?

Meanwhile, Yun Wei Shan and Shangguan Qian chatted about what happened.  Shangguan congratulated Yun Wei Shan for a job well done assassinating the Gong men.

Yun Wei Shan said she did not assassinate the men.  It was not her mission to kill the Sword Wielder. Her mission was to marry Gong Huan Yu who will be the Sword Wielder.

Shangguan understood but she said now Yun Wei Shan will marry Xi Yu but Yun Wei Shan that as Miss Jiang was not expected to live longer because of being poisoned by Yun Wei Shan, there is a chance for Shangguan to get the gold token.

Shangguan said that marrying the Sword Wielder was never her mission.  In fact she did everything to get chosen for the gold token.  It turned out that her mission was Gong Shang Jue.

It looks like the girls mission was to marry the younger Gongs and create a strife through divide and conquer.  So the Gong would implode.

Episode 4

I have to say that the cat and mouse between the chatting Shangguan and Yun Wei Shan is getting rather tedious.

Anyway, there is no logic in the script as far as Xi Yu is concerned. He found Yun Wei Shan trying to escape and then comforted her when she told him that it was her father’s death anniversary who died at sea.  That is why she was sending a paper boat to get to her father’s spirit as a tradition in her village.  Not once did Xi Yu showed sadness or discomfort at the mention of a dead father.  For goodness’ sake his father and brother had just died five minutes ago🤣🤣🤣

Xi Yu was called at the court or the elders.  Gong Shangjue was already there.

Gong Shangjue refused to acknowledge Xi Yu as the new Sword Wielder as with good reason, for wanting he might not be a bonafide member of the Gong because his mother who was known to have a lover before marriage, gave birth to Xi Yu very prematurely.

Xi Yu was just ineffectual with a bleeding heart for women.

The elders mentioned that as tradition would have it Xi Yu should be in morning for three years, he can’t marry, drink, party etc.  But under the circumstances, they will forego the tradition and choose a bride for Xi Yu from the bride candidates at the valley.  The elders also told Gong Shangyue that he had to choose a bride as well.

Xi Yu smirked and said that Gong Shangyue unfortunately will have to have Xi Yu’s cast off.

Gong Shangjue said that he had never had anyone cast off before and he will not going to start now.  He then quickly mentioned Shangguan as his choice which did not please Xi Yu

Shangguan was called to see the elders.  The other brides knew what this meant then Jin Fan turned up to fetch Yun Weishan.

At the court, Xi Yu asked Shangjue why he chose Shangguan, he qualified it with with another question that was it because of Shangguan’s pretty face?

Gong Shangjue commented that he did not even noticed Shangguan’s pretty face until just now but Xi Yu obviously had.

Xi Yu quickly looked at Weishan rather ashamed.  He was so out of his depths.

Again, Gong Shangjue led the conversation.  He said that Weishan and Shangguan should stay at a well guarded dorm for a while until their background are investigated.  Wufang sent a bride assassin but they could have sent more.

He said it would take at least three days for the result.

There is some cute and lighthearted fun in this drama brought by the man-hungry Gong Zi Shang.  She was so busy seducing Jin Fan but at the same time, she is quite smart.

Cream of the crop. Gong Huanyu and Gong Shangjue.

Gong Shangjue was the first one to pass the three trials.

Xi Yu told Gong Zi Shan and Jin Fan that the more against Shangjue of Xi Yu the Sword Wielder the more determine Xi Yu to prove himself.

A Wufeng sleeper for 20 years. It was identified as Housekeeper Jia but Xi Yu had his doubt that Housekeeper Jia was the one who killed his father and brother.

The prettier the woman the more dangerous she is.

Who is prettier? They are both pretty so they both come with danger.

Yuanzhi as tasked by Shangjue to bring Shangguan to their adjacent villa as she is his chosen bride.

What kind of an ending that was?

The romance had turned into a bromance.

Shangguan Qian tried to steal the Infinite Heat but Gong Shangjue stopped her.  He threatened to kill her but she whispered to him to let her go because she was pregnant with his baby.

He allowed her to get away but he managed to retrieve the Infinite Heat from her.

Finally, all the fighting had ceased.

It turned out that Gong Shangjue had a heart of gold or quite soft inside.  It was him who encouraged Gong Ziyu to pass the test.  He used to send him little notes under Ziyu’s father’s name.  Ziyu, however, always new that the notes was not from his father and suspected that it was form Gong Shangjue.

Gong Shangjue recognised Ziyu as the true Sword Wielder.

Ziyu noticed that Yu Wei Shan had a packed bag.  He told her that as much as he wanted to have her by his side and grow old with him, he knew that he could not force her to stay.

Wei Shan told him that she was only going to be away for a few days. She confessed to him that she was a twin and she wanted to see her sister, her only family at LiXi Town.  She promised to be back.

Ziyu excitedly waited for her to return.  On the day of her ETA, he sat on the perron waiting for her. Hours passed. Days passed. He sat there waiting, not eating as the packed lunches Jin Fan brought him remained untouched.

As to Wei Shan, she saw her sister and a few more people from Wefang.  She is trapped!
