Allen Jones, “Chair”, 1969

Time to visit Tate Britain again.  They always have these avant-garde pieces.

Allen Jones, “Chair”, 1969

For example this “Chair” by the British pop artist, Allen Jones which he created in 1969 was back in circulation.   This type of art was popular in the 60s and to a certain extent, admired!

We have moved on thankfully and  sexist arts like this are now frowned upon  and  are heading towards where the dodos have gone.  Sometimes political correctness has its uses! 😉

When the “Chair” was acquired by Tate Britain in 1981, it attracted a lot of controversy.

During International Women’s Day in 1986, a couple of protestors defaced the figure by pouring paint stripper over the mannequin’s face which caused it to shrivel.

Though it was assumed that the motive of the  attack was of feminist protest, the perpetrators were never caught.

I can just see this in Christian Grey’s Red Room.  Oh my LOL
