Quick Precis
Despite turbulent times, a man from an ordinary background fell in love with a woman who comes from the richest family in Shanghai.
Episode 1
I must say I truly love the first episode. I am impressed with how it was made and how the script is already taut from the very first few minutes.
The cast is also excellent.
I thought I would check this drama even if I am not enamored with the female lead. After all it has Oliver Chen and Evan Lin as male leads. But I am pleasantly surprised. Zhang Jingyi is very suitable as the female lead. She is feisty, pretty, and looks intelligent.
Anyway, the story is set during the Republican Era where turbulence was a way of living in China.
Mu Wanqing was coming back from Japan after 10 years of being away. She wanted to bury the ashes of her mother.
She was on the top deck of the liner to have breakfast before disembarking when she noticed a couple having some intriguing conversation/interaction
The girl insisted on going back to their cabin because she had a stomachache. The man was telling her to stay with him as he can’t eat without her. Anyway, the girl still insisted and they were making such a scene, the man let her go.
But he followed her soon enough. He then found the girl, Su Man, trying to open his suitcase.
Su Man was working for the current government and wanted to find the mutiny map in Tan Xuanlin’s suitcase.
Xuanlin killed Su Man. He was in the process of hiding Suman under the bed when Mu Wanqing barged in thinking it was her bedroom as the number of the door became number 6 instead of 9 due to a loose screw. LOL
Xuanlin hurried to the door and told Wanqing not to make any noise.
They disembarked together and let her go thinking she was Japanese and can’t understand Chinese.
But he quickly found out that she was not Japanese so he grabbed her again and hand cupped her to him.
He checked them in a hotel. On the way to the room, Wanqing noticed a handsome officer. She wanted to ask for help but she was frightened of Xuanlin who was giving her murderous warning looks.
He cupped her into the bed and left to do some reconnaissance outside.
Wangqing used some lotion from the bedside table to make her hand slippery. She managed to get out of the cup and took the suitcase next to the door.
She then left quickly but saw Xuanlin coming out from the lift.
She ran for safety and saw the handsome young office, Xu Guangyao who was just about to enter a room. She pushed him in with following.
She found herself in a room full of armed soldiers. But she finally realised that Guangyao was her beloved childhood sweetheart.
At the same time Guangyao also new that he was looking at the girl he cannot forget.
Wangqing ran to his arms happily. She then told him that she was kidnapped by the man she was with a while ago.
Later on, he took her to her family’s house.
Having been away for ten years, no one really recognised her.
She met her ‘sister’ and stepmother, who did not like her.
Guangyao noticed that the suitcase she was carrying was not the one she was holding when she was with the man.
He helped her into her room and they opened the suitcase but Mu Wanting interrupted them. She brought clothes for Wangqing to wear for the party that night.

Meanwhile, Xuanlin realised that their carefully planned plot was unraveling at the seams. He told Wu Xiang Ying that they had to go ahead with the mutiny immediately.
Episode 2
The elite and the top rank military were invited to the Mu party.
Mu Zhi Yuan is the richest merchant in Shanghai and very influential as he was funding the Xu led military.
Commander General Xu was just saying the strong bond between the Mu and the Xu and it would get closer as there will be a marriage between the families.
Xu Guangyao was asked to lead the dance.
Mu Wanting excitedly expecting Guangyao to ask her to dance but at that moment, Wangqing was at the top of the stairs and Guangyao had only eyes for her.
Mu Zhi Yuan was surprised to see his daughter.
Anyway, Guangyao went to get Wangqing and asked her to dance.
They were dancing and whispering about the mysterious suitcase, She said that she found a map which looked like a military one.
Their dancing stopped when Governor Pei Xun interrupted and announced that General Xu’s role will be renewed and with enhanced duty and power.
Suddenly, Xuanlin turned up and controlled the proceeding saying that the municipality is now under his control after the success of the mutiny. He wanted General Xu and Governor Pei Xun to issue a telegram announcing the new controller of the town.
He then took Guangyao as a hostage but Wangqing volunteered instead.
So with Wangqing, he left.
Mu Zhiyuan told Peixun and General Xu that he will no longer support the military unless his daughter is safe and sound and back at home.
Guangyao told his father that he will talk Xuanlin off his rebellion.
Episode 3 – 4
Xuanlin would not return to Wangqing her diary unless she gives him money.
Xuanlin needed the money for military expenses.
Wangqing finally asked her father to give her her mother’s dowry.
Her father said no problem. He said to ask her stepmother who was dealing with it.
Her stepmother said that all the monies were gone because of bad investments.
instead of going mental, Wangqing did not say anything but she did hear later that the stepmother had hidden the money away.
