2025 – Happy New Year

Our New Year Eve Chinese traditional 13 fruits to welcome a New Year

Happy New Year to everyone, hope it will find you all well.

A Philippine tradition of having 13 varieties of round fruits prominently displayed on the dinner table on New Year’s day bring good fortune and prosperity for the year.  The above is our offering.🤗

Another tradition , this time from the UK was fireworks display right after Big Ben strikes midnight.  This year was particularly spectacular and special as it is also a celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the London Eye whis was the centre piece of the firework display annually.

London mayor, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m really excited about the London New Year’s Eve fireworks, the biggest fireworks taking place anywhere across Europe. – The Guradian

Thirteen Fruits for New Year Good Luck

Christmas and the New Year are the two main big celebrations in the Philippines.

This is saying a lot because Filipinos celebrate everything including opening an envelop. Sorry, I am exaggerating of course, but Filipinos do love a good fiesta, festival, birthdays, baptism, wedding, anniversaries and other celebrations. People even celebrate a new purchase of something big or memorable.

Anyway, the New Year is celebrated with a lot of pomp and circumstance in the form of big, huge firework displays participated by everyone in front of their house, windows and doorways.

This is followed by more superstitions of jumping up and down to promote growth in height.

Then, the alcohol becomes free-flowing until in the early hours of the morning.

But the piece de resistance is the food-laden table where a vast bowl with 13 kinds of fruits takes pride of place.

The thirteen fruits must be from different varieties like apples, grapes, watermelon, persimmon, lemon, lime, Asian pear, kiwi, grapefruits, chico, avocado, orange, nectarine, plum, etc.

The fruits should be ideally round as they symbolises good fortune, or money rolling into the household.

Anyway, now living in London, I have adopted this tradition and had been following it for more than thirty years.

To all our visitors at GLOBAL GRANARY, wishing you a safe, healthy, happy and fruitful
