St Jerome – Patron Saint of Librarians

St Jerome is best known for his translation of the Bible from Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic into Latin.  His version was called the Vulgate and still considered one of the most important books of all times.

St Jerome wrote extensively and left a library of prose on theology and commentaries on the Hebrew Gospels.  It is any wonder that St Jerome is the Patron Saint of Librarians!  His feast day is 30th September.

St Jerome is commemorated on 30 September; his sainthood is recognised by the Catholic Church, the Easter Orthodox Church, the Lutheran Church and the Church of England.

I love the above painting.  I saw the original one hanging in a dimly lit chapel at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valetta, Malta last year.  It was painted by Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.  We were not allowed to take pictures of this amazing painting but just admire it from a few feet away.  Total magic in a beautifully ornate church of St John’s Co-Cathedral.
