One of the foods that I always promise myself to taste/feast on whenever I go back home to the Philippines is the taho. Taho is not just a silken tofu made to taste like ambrosia. It is a memory of a childhood full of love, care and nurturing as well as laughter within an extended family.

The magtataho would often passed by the houses just after breakfast until elevenses. He would carry two aluminium buckets suspended at each side of a yoke on his shoulder as he shouts “Taho! Taho” which can be music to the ears of those who have been waiting for him.  We have been known to rush to the open windows, to the doors and shout, begging him to wait for a minute or two while we look for our purses.

Taho – Silken Tofu Dessert

The bigger aluminum bucket contains the silken tofu while the slightly smaller one has the arnibal, which is a brown sugar syrup, and sago pearls, which is like but at least double the size of tapioca pearls.

We certainly feasted on taho whilst in the Philippines last Christmas and the New Year, Peter, my darling hubby enjoyed taho despite having a very English palate. Well it is that good.

I can recommend trying taho to anyone who is bound for te Philippines. Try it and you’ll love it.
