Tired today, after a wonderful weekend Jean and I settled down to sleep on Sunday night. Soon after midnight I was woken (I am a light sleeper) by what sounded like music and talking.
I could hear this muted but fairly audible sound apparently emanating from downstairs in our neighbours house next door?
I could hear it through the bedroom wall and floor
Envying my wife’s ability to sleep through most anything once her lovely eyes shut, I lay awake trying to get to sleep for about 20 minutes.
We are lucky that compared to our other side ‘moan a moment’ newbie Neanderthal-like neighbours (sorry to insult Neanderthals), our immediate next-door neighbours are nice and friendly, we have known them for decades. We only had one issue with nighttime noise with them many years ago and that was resolved OK.
It was now 1 AM and me was contemplating going around next door to request that the sound be turned down. I was also curious as our neighbours are elderly & normally in bed by at least midnight and yet they appeared to be listening to pop/trance music and a rapid voiced DJ.
Were they holding some sort of Rave party!?
Still undecided on nocturnal noise remedies & I needed to go to the loo (toilet – with my accumulated years this one of the Ages of Man!). I traipsed to the toilet in the dark and on these short journeys, I have often mused about the benefits of inventing a luminous toilet seat, thus avoiding blinding one’s self when switching on the light and disturbing sleeping others, this will also improve men’s aims in the dark!
I noticed the noise was slightly louder in the loo and thought this was unusual. Half awake I crept downstairs trying to locate the source. I moved through our lounge avoiding our sleeping dog in the next room (Hmm I was not so impressed with his guard duty woof alarm skills- where was the barking frenzy when you need it !?).
As I approached our kitchen, I could see an eerie blue glow. And I could hear fairly loud music.
I entered the kitchen and saw and heard that our digital (DAB) radio was on and making the racket !? It was tuned to BBC Radio One (pop music channel).
Puzzled, I looked at the radio’s operating menu and saw that the timer had been engaged for 00 midnight hour! Normally each night, we switch off the radio at the socket (not this time!) it looked like one of us had inadvertently selected the timer mode when recently re-tuning the radio!
After rapidly switching it off (ripping the electric plug out of the socket!) I returned to bed, hoping that our neighbours would not be knocking to complain about the noise!
