God Blooms in Flowers

And God is the weight that bends the bough

Time and again I have said that I love spring and summer most because of the flowers that are blooming. This year particularly has been a time for the most beautiful and most abundant of blooms. Roses in our garden have never been so verdant. It just been one show after another of hauntingly beautiful, fragrant colours of velvety petals.

It is almost mystical that the petals are so arranged in such symmetry. A real work of God which reminds me of the poem below by R S Thomas.

Little flowers

Little flowers

Little flowers

A blessing on the flowers
That God has made so good,
From crops of jealour gardens
To wildlings of a wood.

God Blooms in Flowers

And God is the weight that bends the bough
Of the young tree gently as spring snow.
His is the lightness on the summer flower
Of the bee’s touch, and his the power
That tames the sea and poises like a feather
Or a loose leaf the world. He threads together
The stars for necklace and his glory shows,
Then hides himself within the cloistered rose.

R S THOMAS,
WELSH POET

Little flowers

For the flowers are great blessings …
For the flowers have their angels even the words of God’s creation.
For the warp and woof of flowers are worked by perpetual moving spirits.
For the flowers are good both for the living and the dead.
For there is a language of flowers.
For there is a sound reasoning upon all flowers.
For flowers are peculiarly the poetry of Christ.
For flowers are medicinal.
For flowers are musical in ocular harmony.
– Christopher Smart
