Fruit: Lanzones

Apparently lanzones originates in Southeast Asia and of course, it is where Philippines is located.

The Lanzones fruit from the Philippines is seasonal, usually they are available during October to around Christmas time.

It grows in bunches like grapes.  They are double the size of grapes and covered in fairly tough yellow skin which is easy to remove or peel.   The flesh is segmented from 2 – 4 little pouches which can hold quite a  good size seed/seeds.  The flesh is translucent which looks like that of lycee.

The lanzones can be sour but if the fruit has been allowed to fully ripen, it can be so gloriously sweet.  Biting into the flesh will not spray you with juices, the flesh is solid sweetness.  Be mindful though of peeling the fruit because it has a small amount of sticky sap.  No need for alarm, it does not stain your hand or your clothes.  Just a quick wash or use of baby wipes will solve the problem, if it is a problem at all.

If you are in the Philippines during lanzones season, it is worth having a taste of this little yellow balls of sweetness.  Love this over lycee, which has a plasticky after taste to it.
