This is a rather gritty school/youth drama. Not the typical idol romance.
The film started in 1996 when Bei Bing was just eighteen years old and studying in a vocational school.
Anyway, Yan Bei Bing is a leader of a girl gang.
One of their members was called a slut by one of the boys in their school.
Bei Bing would not have this; her gang raided the boys’ locker room. Beibing created such mayhem with the boys and was left almost naked in the spa.
She realised that her childhood friend Yu Yi was among the boys in the locker room/bath.
Seeing it was really getting out of hand, Yu Yi dragged Beibing away.
Yu Yi and Beibing became inseparable afterwards.
Beibing developed a crush on Yu Yi but she later found out that he was already in love with someone else. It was a beautiful transfer student, Ziwei, who Yu Yi met in their choir group.
Yu Yu told Beibing that he wanted to get a part-time job so he could earn money and go to college as he was quite good in IT.
It so happened that a club they went to, where Beibing created another fuss was owned by Lei Guan, who used to work for her father.
Lei Guan had instructed his minions to treat Beibing as a family as her father was his master/mentor.
It was going well at first, Yu Yi was employed and so did Beibing but her father warned her not to get close to Lei Guan as he was a bad guy.
Bei Bing ignored her father’s advice. She does not have much respect for her father because she had turned out the way she did because of her father, who was jailed for fraud which caused her mother to divorce him and leave her with her father.
Anyway, she was half drunk in the club when she went out to get some fresh air. She saw Lei Guan having his minion beat up a boy, her classmate because he could not pay his debts.
Beibing stopped the beating by begging Lei Guan to stop it, Ths was the first time she saw that he was really a nasty character.
Anyway, the boy thank her but at the same time told her that she should not have interfered as he will only get her into trouble.
Ziwei saved Beibing from almost being crushed by falling shelves at their vocational training. Beibing was so grateful that she became friends with Ziwei and more or less gave her blessing for Ziwei and Yu Yi to get together.
They all became friends until one day, there were rumours in the school saying that Ziwei transferred to their school to get away from the traumatic experience of being raped by a gang.
Ziwei said that this was true but some of the nasty boys at school were unkind to her.
To cheer themselves up they went to a karaoke bar and sang their hearts out until they fell asleep.
When Yu Yi and Beibeing awoke, Ziwei was gone but had left a note saying that Beibing and Yu Yi should cherish one another and forget about her.
Both were very upset. But life goes on. Yu YI promised Beibing that he would go with her to Hong Kong to study.
They were on the high street when they saw Ziwei getting into the car of Lei Guan.
They followed her to the club and tried to convince her to leave with them thinking that she was being forced by Lei Guan to stay with him.
Yu Yi was going berserk and ended up being beaten by Lei Guan and his minion. Bei Bing tried to stop it but they were locked in a room until her father came to get them.
At home, her father confessed that he went to jail for Lei Guan who framed him for theft of money. Her father told her that he wanted her to go study abroad so that she can have a different life from him.
BeiBing started knuckling down on her studies, but she got a call one day from Ziwei who said that she wanted to say goodbye because she was leaving with Lei Guan who was opening up another club in Dalian. She said that she was very happy and really liked Lei Guan and he really likes her as well.
Suddenly a group of men tried to kidnap Ziwei. She got away but only to walk into a passing truck.
She died immediately.
Yu YI blamed Lei Guan for the death of Ziwei so as revenge he started torching the club.
Beibing was told what Yu Yi was intending to do so and she went to find him.
In the club, Lei Guan started beating up Yu Yi and when Beibing tried to stop the beating, Lei Buan pointed the gun at her.
The minions started beating her as well and someone stabbed her and would have killed her if Yu Yi did not cover her with his body and taken the punishment instead. They were going to be killed but the police arrived just in time.
After getting out of the hospital, Beibing was sent to Hongkong by her father while Yu Yi was expelled from school.
He was putting away the desks and chairs when he noticed that Beibing had carved ‘I Like You’ underneath his desk. He suddenly realised that Beibing was into him all the time.
Three years later. Beibing had just resigned from her work which displeased her foreign boyfriend. She told him that the work she was doing was not challenging her. It was not what she wanted. Her boyfriend asked her what was it she wanted?
She had no idea, she said.
She got a call from someone from her past. It was the boy she had saved from a beating and death from Lei Guan.
The boy is now a rich entrepreneur. Again he told her to drop her boyfriend so he could pursue her. He said that he can now face her bravely.
He told her that he went to a place at the back of their school where they used to hang out and he found a letter addressed to her.
The letter was from Yu YI. He had now become a seaman and was currently in the middle of the ocean. He said that as far as he goes into the vast water the more he felt closer to their hometown and to her. He said that the letter she was holding was the 13th one he had written to her.
Finally, he confessed that he liked her too.
