Episode 1
Kakinoki Kukichi was coming back from the bathhouse where he ended up treating a man who had collapsed. He almost ran over a girl who was pulling a suitcase.
When he automatically apologised he noticed that the girl was looking excitedly at him.
The girl asked him if he had completely forgotten the face of his own daughter.
It suddenly clicked that he was looking at Miyako who he had not seen for a long time.
Anyway, he ushered her home to his beautifully preserved machiya house.
Miyako was surprised that he doesn’t have a working clinic anymore.
Kukichi said that he was still a doctor but he doesn’t really hold clinic anymore but rather does home visits.
Because of the long time they had been separated they were very awkward.
Kukichi asked how old she was.
She said she was twenty.
Kukichi said it has been twelve years since he had seen her. She was only 8 when she left with her mother.
Miyako said that she saw him in the spring of last year when she took the college exam for Kyoto. She saw him cycling so she did not bother to approach him. She added that she had failed to get in twice and now given up cram school all together.
She more or less, implied that she had come to live with him which he thought was a bad idea as he told Ikeda Isako, one of his regulars (patient)
Ikeda Isako said that probably Miyako was running away from home.
Episode 2
I love this drama. There is so much to learn like the shoki which look like fearsome beings on rooftops of michiya which are like the gargoyle that decorates gothic buildings in the UK.
Apparently this shoki wards of evil spirits, bad luck, illness, and pestilence.
Mrs Ikeda saw Miyako and said that she had the same look as her granddaughter, Aoi, who is now pregnant after eloping but had returned.
Mrs Ikeda warned Kukichi to watch over Miyako.
Kukichi was a bit upset but not as upset as Miyako herself when she was registered as Miyano Miyako upon her mother’s remarriage.
Episode 3
Fact: Large Chochin are Japanese lanterns first crafted in 1085 which was made with bamboo frame covered in silk or paper.
Kukichi saw that Miyako had taken 300,000 yen in his account and does not know how to talk about with her.
It looks like she has a British boyfriend called Anthony she met online.
Kukichi found out that she gave the money to Anthony because he was cheated on a business deal.
Kukichi was not upset with Miyako. He asked if Anthony was Candy Candy (aww remember this. My favourite shoju manga in the early 80s) Kukichi told her that he was grateful that she had come to see him even if for money only. He is more worried now that she got what she wanted that she will leave again.
Miyako said that she intends to stay in Kyoto because Anthony will come soon because he has a business in Kyoto.
Miyako said that she wanted Kukichi to meet Anthony as her father.
Episode 4
Fact: Nishiki Market is known as the kitchen of Kyoto. It has a 400 years history
The father and daughter are bonding beautifully. It is so heartwarming! They were making videos for Anthony. He said that he loves his daughter in the video and Miyako edited it and kept playing it
It was the day that they were meeting Anthony.
Anthony did not show up. After research, the bloody Anthony turned out to be a conman and had deceived many girls already for money
Poor Miyako was heartbroken.
Episode 5
Fact: Kamo River has been flowing to Kyoto since ancient times since the Heian period and had become the symbol of Kyoto.
Episode 6
Fact: Kimonos are often worn on tea ceremonies and flower arrangement parties.
