Episode 1
Zhang Qi is passionate about his aircraft and would not let anyone endanger them. But during this period, there was pervasive oppression in the air as China was under the rule of Japan and the communist party is on a fledgling stage of development. Members of the communist party were persecuted as they were thought to be a subversive organisation.
A captain had turned up at Zhang Qi’s hanger and proceeded to order to have each plane searched.
Immediately Zhang Qi and the other pilots went for their guns to protect the planes.
The Minister of Education tried to calm everyone up and explained to the captain that the planes cost a lot of money had needed to be protected as they could be delicate having been bought from America and France as second hands.
The captain said that he heard communist propaganda was being flown in by the planes.
Anyway, the captain tried to have Zhang Qi and a newly arrived pilot, Nian Qiao, arrested.
The Minister intervened telling the captain that Zhang Qi is the youngest son of a generous donor to their party.
So Nian Qiao was taken in.
Meanwhile, Zhang Qi thought that they should be recruiting more students in aviation but despite their recruitment drive no one seemed to be interested.
It so happened that his parents have been talking about his betrothal and marriage to Meng Hai Tang, who is the daughter of his father’s friend who is very influential and far-thinking. Shang Qi went to pay them a visit but found that not only Meng Wuran was reluctant to help him because he believed that being a pilot was a rich man’s hobby. Everyone should be farmers and till the land.
Shang Qi also noticed that his betrothed was being confined to her room. She refused to meet Shang Qi because she was promised by her father that she would be independent and free to do whatever she wanted.
Meng Hai Tang was upset that her father went back on his word. But what really frustrated her was that he secretly changed her course in university. She was desperate to study archeology but found out that she was now enrolled in the Education of Chinese traditions.
She was able to escape from her room and climb a wall to get away from their house. It so happened that Shang Qi was walking around the area when she saw him.
Meng Hai Tang was rather impressed that he was handsome and tall. She fell a little in love when he offer to catch her as she jumped off the wall.
I must say this drama is really interesting but Hu Yi Tian is just too tall to be a pilot at that time. And his acting is rather wooden. Hope he improves. Also, the way he photographed things was unbelievable. He raised his camera and shoot without focusing first. This was in the 1930, cameras were not digital. Then when he caught Meng Hai Tang jumping off the wall, he had his camera hanging on his chest. In reality, Meng Hai Tang would have been in pain as the camera would have caught her in the breast area.
But I did enjoy it as Hu Yi Tian and Ruo Nan seemed to have instant chemistry.
