Episode 1
What a dramatic start.
It started in Nanjing in 1936. The Japanese were lording it but a pocket of underground communists were already working together to try and overthrow the Japs.
It was Deputy Minister Hua’s birthday. Hua Zhen came back for the celebration but his father was not too happy with him because Hua Zhen wanted to join the navy rather than go to politics like him.
Anyway, there was a party which was attended by the elite.
Mr Deng, a navy captain gatecrashed the party because he was so desperate to get a book sent out to a family in Shanghai who were staying at Van Hua Hotel. It so happened that Captain Deng saw Hua Zhen and explained the urgency of sending the book to his friend in Shanghai.
As Hua Zhen of Aeronautical Science at SMC was only too happy to do the favour for Mr Deng.
Mr Deng was then escorted out by Wei Dai Qing who was a police inspector. He fitted up Mr Deng by asking him to board a car with a dead body.
Anyway, Hua Zhen was already on his way to Shanghai. He was about to knock on the hotel room in Van Hua which Mr Deng told him his friends were staying when he noticed a gunman who was telling a little girl to shut up. After further investigation, he saw three dead people inside. He later got to little girl who said that her mum, dad and family friend had been killed.
The girl begged him to take her with him as she was scared.
Hua Zhen managed to get the girl out of the hotel, fed her and asked her if she knew what was going on.
The girl told him that her family was waiting for new identification cards before they could leave. Finally, it twigged on him the IDs and travel tickets where contained in the book he was asked to deliver.
He tried to call Mr Deng but he was told he went on holiday.
Episode 2
The little girl is Meng Douci. She told Hua Zhen that a policeman killed her parents and the family friend.
Mysteriously, Capten Chen, who seemingly looked like the killer was actually working with Mr Deng.
Hua Zhen called his brother to find out where Mr Deng was.
After careful investigation, Hua Liang told Hua Zhen that Deng Mingyuan was bad news. He had been arrested for being a member of the underground movement. He is a communist. Hua Liang warned his brother to stay away from Mr Deng.
Hua Zhen could not believe that his mentor is a communist.
Anyway, Hua Zhen told Meng Douci that he could only stay with her for three days and then they will part ways as he was returning to Nanjing.
The actress who plays Meng Douci is just the cutest. Such a good actress. It is really her that gets me riveted to this drama as I am not particularly a fan of Republican dramas.
Anyway, Hua Zhen could not help but be impressed with the little girl as she is so resources, too mature for her own age.
The three days were up so he told Meng Douci that he was leaving. He told her that he had paid for the room and she can stay and have her meal at the restaurant below.
Meng Douci was upset but she understood that he had to leave.
Hua Zhen was already on board the train to Nanjing when he felt guilty leaving Meng Douci all alone in Shanghai. He raced by to the hotel and could not find Douci. At the reception, he was told that he was the second person to ask about the little girl, the first being a policeman.
Now Hua Zhen was really worried. He looked for Douci everywhere until he found her inside a laundry basket, being very frightened.
They travelled together and stayed in a hotel. He told her that if anyone asked, she must say that they were cousin. He also gave her a new identity, Li Qiu Shi. He will be Xiang Yuan Zheng while they investigate the killer policeman.
Episode 3
To investigate the killer policeman who he suspected was Chen Hao, Hua Zhen took the police exam and got perfect score for the first two written test. He was told that he can choose whatever position he wanted.
He realised that it would be strange to choose a little station House if he indeed topped the last test as well. So he did not turn up for the test and got a zero for the test.
He called his brother to make sure his friend, Xiang Yuan Zheng, get to be stationed at Shiliupu Police Station. Of course he did not tell Hua Liang that he was Xiang Yuan Zheng incognito.
Chen Hao was the station captain and recognised him and knew that Hua Zhen was a bogus Xiang Yuan Zheng.
Meanwhile, a cute and perky Luo Min Min who was also assigned at Shiliupu Police Station became a partner for Xiang Yuan Zheng.

This episode is so tense.
This drama is an absolute riveting one to watch. I have to say it again that I am not into Republican drama but this one is so good it draws you in.
Anyway, the best actor of them all is the young girl who played Li Qui Shi. She is a stellar actress one to watch in the future.
Anyway, the plot Hua Zhen devised to catch the culprit by advertising something on the newspaper did not pan out.
Instead poor Li Qiu Shi was put into danger by Luo Minmin’s brother who told the whereabouts of Li Qui Shi because he was being harrassed by a gang for money.
It got so tense, every scene is so tense. The fourth District being a small and not really prepared for emergency was not taking call just before they close the station for the day.
Minmin was warned to not pick the call but then in the end she did and heard Qiu Shi being very frightened as the killer of her parents had got inside the apartment.
Min MIn told Quishi to try to escape. So the desperate Quishi scaped from the window and run into the street.
Meanwhile, Hua Zhen who found out from Minmin what was happening raced to the apartment.
