Meteorological Winter

Today is the end of the meteorological winter which last from 1 December to 28 February or 29th if it is leap year.

Meteorological winter is different from Astronomical winter in the sense that meteorogical winter is measured using the average of three calendar months with the lowest temperatue which is December, January and February.

Astronomical winter is measured by the movement of the Earth relative to the Sun. This is usually from 21 December to 20 March.

20 March is the beginning of spring in the Nothern Hemisphere.

However the little daffodils in our garden seemed to know that today is the end of meteorological winter as they have now started to bloom.  Still pretty cold today but more bearable.
