Fridge & Freezer

The fridge/freezer is such an essential appliance in the house.  In fact I can’t imagine a life without our American fridge/freezer.

We have a year old American fridge freezer.  It is by Samsung and we are very happy with it, touch wood!  This Samsung replaced another American fridge/freezer by Beko.  It was beautiful to look at but not very good in the end.  It was reasonably priced, we thought when we bought it.  It has a lot of capacity but sadly it did not last long.  It broke down after 2 and a half years.  Despite having it serviced  by engineers provided by British Gas and Direct Line Homeserve, the fridge was not fixed.  Apparently it had a major fault on its cooling system which was beyond the abilities of both British Gas and Direct Line Homeserve.  The appliance was faulty.  It was such a major hustle that we decided to just buy a new fridge while dining out and living on take out for at least a couple of weeks while waiting for the delivery of our new fridge.

Fridge & Freezer

Did you know?

Some kinds of food are not really suitable for the fridge like:

  • bananas, they will go black when put in the fridge.  You must store it away from most fruits as they will make the other fruit ripen quickly and spoil.  You can get banana holders where you can hung them.
  • Bread should be store in a bread bin, or in the freezer.
  • Mushroom should be stored in a cold dark place but not in the fridge as it can precipitate discolouration and sogginess.  Store in a dark cupboard and wrap in papers.
  • Oil, it will goes dark or cloudy or even set.
  • potatoes, they can turn green in the fridge.  A green potato can be toxic.  The low temperature of the fridge could hasten sprouting.
  • Do not put hot food in the fridge or even freezer as it will change the temperature of the fridge and may encourage the growth of bacteria.

Food not for freezing:

Fruits and vegetables such as –

  • cucumber
  • raw tomatoes
  • raw onions
  • chicory
  • lettuce
  • radishes
  • raw cabbage
  • raw potatoes
  • marrow
  • watermelon

Money Saving Tips:

helpful tipsDust the back of your fridge/freezer.  Apparently a dusty condenser coil at the back of your fridge can raise your energy consumption.

A full freezer is more energy efficient than a half empty one.  So fill your freezer, even if only making ice-cubes.

Samsung American Fridges @ Currys

Samsung American Fridges @ Currys

Our two-year old Beko AmericanFridge has been playing up.  The bottom part of the fridge has been freezing up which had damaged the water filter and causing all the food, including all the vegetables, wine, colas to freeze solid.

Called the BG engineers to have a look.  Despite two visits from the engineers, the problem remained.  Beko, themselves would charge £200 to repair the fridge.

We therefore decided to just get another American fridge but not a Beko one.

We went to  Currys and were pleasantly surprised by the vast  selection  of fridges.  We fell in love with a couple of Samsung American fridges.  We proceeded to order our first choice but was told by a very helpful young lady that they don’t have it in stock and their system does not tell when it will have anymore in stock.  (Apparently Samsung is very popular?) We were very disappointed by this but  query the availability of our next choice.  Again, they don’t have it in stock.  I asked if we could have the one in the shop.  The sales clerk said that the item was for display.  I said to her that they don’t need a display as they don’t have anything in stock to sell of these models.

She was sympathetic but she can’t really do  anything.  She promised though that she will give us a call if circumstances changes.

We shall see!
