Episode 1
I have been meaning to watch this drama but I sort of chicken out.
I persevered yesterday afternoon and realised why I was putting it off.
The first episode is so depressing. It is also jumpy and fragmented.
Nie Yusheng was a newly arrived heart surgeon at the local hospital.
He went to a little cafe restaurant where he got some cake.
Tan Jing chung was at the till and served him politely without much eye contact.
After her shift, she went to get peaches as her corner shop and took them home. She saw immediately the man waiting for he in front of her apartment.
It was Nie Yusheng who sort of half questioned and half stated that she was married.
She did not reply but offered him a peach, his favourite.
He declined but said some other time. He then left.
She goes into her apartment and found her husband drunk. She washed him and settled him for a comfier sleep.
She then got thinking of Nie Yusheng, who went to the same high school as she did. She was passing by on her bike and she saw him with a gang.
Nie Yusheng then ran after her telling her never to mention what she saw because he does not want to get into any trouble as he was going to university.
Jingchung just looked at him calmly and asked who he was.
Her attitude attracted him and he started stalking her.
It seemed they got into some sort of a relationship because she has a secret box of memorabilia.
She has a voice-over that she had been expecting him to show up. She also said that her life right now is so grim, she was a living dead.
Her son has congenital heart disease and every cent she earned from her many part-time jobs goes into an account for her son’s operation.
Unfortunately, her wastrel of a husband was into getting rich quick and no matter how many times he had invested into some dodgy business he never learns his lesson and now he was asking Jingchung to give him the 100,000 she had saved because he met someone with a sure-thing investment that would earn them 5000 return monthly.
Jingchung declined his request.
Her husband said that perhaps she could ask Nie Yusheng for money as he heard he had returned.
Jingchung brought her son to the hospital for a checkup.
Her son’s x-ray was given to Nie Yusheng who did not know that it was her son.
But when he saw her and her son, he was very cold and austere. He then advised her to get the operation done on her son before he turns 10.
