Custard Apple (Atis)
Atis, aside from being called custard apple is also known as sugar apple. But in the Philippines, it is only called atis, a much love fruit from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao.
Atis, when ripe can be very soft. It takes minimal squeeze to prise apart the knobbly shell-like skin. Inside the fruit are little segments of white sweetly fragrant flesh covering black seeds/stone. The white flesh are very sweet and soft. You eat the flesh and spit out the seeds, daintily of course as mother would say.
