Picnic at the Heath

Yesterday has been forecasted for days by the weather Met Office  to be glorious, very much different from the weather of previous days, weeks & loooong months.  It is said that the Bank Holiday weekend will be even hotter than some islands in the Canaries.  We have to wait and see.

This news had inspired us to go for an impromptu picnic at  Golders Hill Park., next to Hampstead Heath NW London. 🙂

It seemed that we were not the only ones who had the picnic idea.  There were a lot of people dressed in various summer fineries; the ladies wearing cardigans with their thin summer dresses;  still a bit of a chill in the air.

There was a great atmosphere in the park with many people, families etc.; there was a man flying a kite, which got really, really high up in the sky.  This fascinated our little Nathan so much, he was transfixed by the graceful undulating kite.

James, Stacey, Nathan, Peter and I sat on a tablecloth on the grass and had a wonderful time catching up.  Nathan, my nearly four-year old grandson, was such a delight.  He tried to take our little dog, Diesel, for a walk but he ended up being taken for a run by Diesel instead.  That was rather a hilarious sight but not so funny with the people having their picnic too as Diesel gate-crashed their meal. LOL

Tea, Peter brought in a Thermos, drunk in the park tasted so much better.  Though the picnic was spur of the moment idea, we were able to bring with us the basics.  We had boiled eggs, sausages, pork pies, Scotch eggs, egg & bacon & ploughman’s cheese sandwiches, tomatoes, pickled onions and cakes.

After the meal we had a bit of a look around in the park.  We noticed that the giant sculpture of the peeping head called Visitor 1 sculpted by David Breuer  which was part submerged in the park’s lake  that Peter & I saw and photographed last September  had gone, it was only a temporary visitor!   It was such a pity because that piece of art looked like it truly belonged there.

The gardens did not have as much flowers this time of year; they may bloom soon. It was due to the prolong cold & rainy weather that stayed and stayed even throughout spring.

I miss the burst of colours from the flowering bulbs but I supposed this was compensated from the flowering trees which thank goodness grow profusely within the park.

It was a lovely day and we hope to do it again really soon.
