witchesThere are so many types of phobias, in fact there is a phobia or mania for almost everything, take for instance, Halloween, the fear for this celebration is called Samhainophobia.

Unlike many phobias that have its root words from Greek origins, samhain apparently originated from a Celtic festival, which is celebrated every year.  This celebration marks the end of harvest and the start of winter and darker half of the year.

As much as many children and adults alike enjoy celebrating Halloween or Hallow’s eve, there are also those who are dreading it with sometimes, pathological passion.

Enjoy you candies, enjoy your treats but take heed that not everyone wishes to join in the fun.

UK Marks 100 Years of Wrigley

Wrigley’s chewing gum was first offered over the counter at a chemist’s shop 100 years ago today – and now 725million packets are chewed in Britain each year.

Chewing gum products were first made in the 1860s from the milky juice of the sapodilla tree that grows in central American rainforests.

But it was not until 1911 that William J Wrigley brought the gum he first sold with tins of baking powder over the Atlantic from his company’s Chicago base.

Spearmint was the only flavour on sale at Heppells chemist shop in Picadilly, central London, but juicy fruit was to follow three years later.

Wrigley set up a warehouse in London’s Tottenham Court Road in 1921 and a factory in Wembley six years later. During World War II, when American GIs in Britain had the gum in their ration packs, it began to be seen as luxury item.

After an era of austerity, it was associated with glamour and youth in the 1950s.

Hamish Thomson, Wrigley’s general manager for Britain said: ‘Despite all the political, cultural and technical changes, the core of what we do remains clear – to celebrate simple pleasures to brighten everyone’s day.’

Yakult – Probiotic Dairy Product

Yakult was created by a Japanese physician in 1935. He was Dr Minora Shirota.

Yakult is a fermented drink which contains lactic acid bacteria. Dr Shirota wanted to help people maintain healthy balance of good bacteria in their intestine. Apparently a bottle of Yakult contains 6.5 billion friendly bacteria. These bacteria are called Lactobacillus casei Shirota, named after the doctor himself.

Dr Shirota chose the word Yakult from the universal language of Esperanto. It means yogurt,however yakult is not a yogurt.

I remember my grandfather used to buy us Yakult from the Magnolia man, who came peddling dairy product from a little ice-box attached to a bicycle. This was in the earliest part of the 80s.

We preferred the Magnolia chocolate milk but my grandpa said that he heard Yakult was better for us and healthier. My grandpa had always been progressive. The Yakult may have been better but it tasted funny. It slightly sour taste was rather foreign at that time.
