I watched this film in its entirety; almost two hours.
It is watchable enough after all it has Mikako.
I don’t know if the film is just too deep because I did not really get the meaning of it.🤪
Mikako plays Naomi who is an only child. Her parents suddenly passed away after a car accident.
Her Uncle, with his wife, took responsibility of her and got her an apartment in a plush building. She has a beautiful view of the sky and the city down below.
Despite living in the city, she still works as an editor in a small publishing company in the countryside or something.
Public transport is so good there was no problem with commuting.
Anyway, despite the small publishing company, there are some salacious things that go on like one of her workmates was pregnant with one of their colleagues but she married someone else and tried to pass the baby off as her husband’s. She was hoping that the baby would not come too soon or it buggers up the dating of the conception.
Anyway, Naomi’s uncle was a very kind soul and looks after her well, her young aunt as well but she tends to be really nosy and would let herself in Naomi’s flat even when she was not around. She did help look after Naomi’s cat.
Naomi’s comfort in life was her cat.
She once told her aunt that she had not cried even once when her parents died. She doesn’t know whether she was lonely or not because she had been like this throughout her life; she does not get what it was to be lonely.
One day, Naomi was on the elevator when someone started talking to her. She was not too enthused at first but when he removed his dark glasses, she recognised him as Morinori Tokito who is a very popular actor.
He asked her if she knew how to make omelet rice. She said she did and invited him to her apartment to feed him.
He noticed the unpacked boxes.
She told him that she had just moved in.
He also saw her parents’ memorial tablets.
She told them that they died recently. He told her that both his parents are dead as well.
He enjoyed the omelet rice and said goodbye afterwards.
The next time she saw him was in the elevator again. He was carrying a bunch of flowers which he said was given to him but he will let her have it as he doesn’t have a vase in his house.
They got talking and drinking.
He kissed her. She was shocked at first.
He asked her if he should continue. He was handsome and looks harmless so she said to go ahead until one thing led to another.
They started seeing each other in her apartment but he said to her that she must not develop any feelings for him as he was not into that kind of thing.
One day she asked him to do a book on his philosophy.
He was unsure at first but then he did tell her to use him while they are together. So they had their question and answer where he said that he could not see the point of looking after animals because they die. Cats have only fifteen years of lifespan. It will just bring heartbreak.
He told her that the stronger your feelings with someone, the greater the heartbreak when they are gone.
But he also said that probably one day he will end up looking after kittens and puppies.
She then jumped him and they ended up in her bed once again.
She may be replete but she also felt empty after waking up alone again.
Her cat had passed away from a malignant tumor.
She had the cat cremated.
Aiko, Naomi’s pregnant workmate was downstairs, in front of Naomi’s apartment. Her water had broken but she was adamant not to tell her husband and family that she was about to have the baby. She would not allow Naomi to bring her to the hospital either.
It was only when they found a very discreet clinic that Aiko finally allowed herself to be taken to it.
She had a healthy baby and Naomi said that Aiko now has a daughter who would call her mother for the rest of her life.
The film ended with Naomi eating omurice and then feeling good about herself. She had moved her parents’ tablet from the closet and now had taken pride of place by the huge floor-length window of the apartment, with her cat between her parents’ memorial. She felt alive looking up the sky.
