Episode 1

This drama is a version of the American, The Good Wife.  I must say it is well made but I thought Yuan Quan was not really suitable for her role because she looks too accomplished, so unflappable that nothing would faze her.

Gu Nian is supposed to be rather on the delicate side as she had given up everything, her previous job, to look after her child/children and had become completely reliant on her husband.

Anyway, just like the American version, Gu Nian’s life had come crashing down in just a matter of days.  Her husband was arrested for dirty business dealing.  During his arraignment, it was revealed that he was sleeping with women provided to him as incentives.

The consequence of the scandal meant Gu Nian became a pariah and the first person she lost was the friendship of her best friend.

As her husband had been incarcerated,  there is no income coming in and therefore she can’t pay the mortgage so she lost her house as well and had to move to a smaller apartment.

She found a job as a probationary lawyer after she was recommended by her old university school friend, Feng Sheng.

Episode 2

It was not smooth sailing on the job front because she had been away from the workplace for many years. Despite being mature, she was as nervous as a young intern.

Her first case was to defend a fairly easy case, about a drunk driver.

She made such a palaver setting up her desk at the court. She was all thumbs so she dropped her documents and had to pick them up.  Because of nerves, she knocked her water bottle into her notes.

Ling Yi was at the court to see how she got on and was very disappointed by how amateurish Gu Nian was.

When Ling Yi returned to the office she was forced to ask why Feng Sheng recommended her, was it because they had a relationship back in college>

Feng Sheng was quick to deny any relationship.

Anyway, the case was lost and the drunk driver chose to go to prison despite confessing to Gu Nian that it was not really who was driving, she was not even there at first.  It was her husband who had a few drinks.  He convinced her to confess that she was driving. He told her that if he goes to prison, their business will go bankrupt and their son will live a sorry life.  He managed to use emotional blackmail on his wife to go to prison on his behalf.
