Episode 1
Wow! Love this first episode. Really evocative. The acting is superb.
Qiao Man was chatting to her grandpa Qiao Gui to tell her more about Wei Shao.
Qiao Gui, who was a Governor of Yanzhou then, said that he first met the Weis during a deer hunt that he threw to make alliances. It was a very convivial event.
Wei Lun, the patriarch of the Wei clan, was so grateful of the Yongning Canal that Governor Qiao had built and shared with them. It allowed water to freely flow into Xindu and neighbouring counties. Wei Lun promised that they would always protect Yanzhou with all their might in return.
This symbiotic alliance worked for quite some years. But something happened. Bianzhou sent Li Su to create a division between the Qiao and the Wei by spreading fake news.
The Weis thought that Governor Qiao had done the dirty on them so Wei Bao, the first grandson decided to take control of the Wei and declare war against Bianzhou and what the Wei thought as the traitorous Yanzhou.
Governor Qiao was aghast at the Wei’s action after all the support they had provided the Wei clan. .
The poor Weis faced massacre from Bianzhou. Wei Bao just managed to hide little boy Wei Shao inside a chest after telling the boy that the responsibility of the Wei clan is now on Wei Shao’s shoulders.
Poor Wei Shao witnessed his brother Wei Bao dying before his eyes.
Fourteen years later, Wei Shao was now coming to Xindu to recapture it from Li Su. Yanzhou was supporting Li Su but before it got out of hand as Wei Shao was sure to target Yanzhou next, a quick marriage alliance was put forward.
Wei Shao was to be married off to Qiao Fan, the daughter of the current Governor. But she was already secretly dating Bi Zhi. Qiao Fan was a good uncomplicated girl and was prepared to break up with Bi Zhi.
Having learned her cousin’s predicament, Qiao Man encouraged and helped her cousin eloped with Bi Zhi. She told Qiao Fan that she will marry the scary Wei Shao herself.
Qiao Man warned Bi Zhi to make her sacrifice be worth it. She told him that she will personally kill him if he mistreat Qiao Fan.
Qiao Man was actually about to marry a Mr Liu but Qiao Man could not stand him. So she told her uncles, father, grandpa, mother that she will marry Wei Shao. She told her grandpa that perhaps, the Pinyi seal should be made her dowry as a sweetener to Wei Shao.
Her grandpa admired her tactics.
She and her reteniue were immediately sent to Xindu for the wedding.
Wei Shao was not expecting the wedding convoy and was about to shoot with his bow and arrow the wedding carriage but he was stopped by his adviser. He was reminded that the marriage alliance was proposed by Wei Shao’s grandma, Lady Xu.
Anyway, he was resigned to a marriage alliance but then he got angry again when both side could not agree where the wedding should be held.
He was prepared to send Qiao Man back to Yanzhou but then he saw her face and he changed his mind.
Episode 2
Yeah, really loving this drama. Thank goodness Song Zuer is back into the dramafold.
Wei Shao saw that Song Zuer is so pretty as Qiao Man so he was secretly beguiled.
Qiao Man’s insisted to her adviser that the wedding should be held in Xindu because if they had to go to Pinyi, she had to give the Pinyi Seal to Wei Shao immediately.
Wei Shao was equally determined to go to Pinyi.
Anyway, Xindu is a derelict county populated mainly by immigrants from the borders. Life was sad and hard with famine on the rise. The people treated Wei Shao with suspicion and fear and would not do what he wanted.
This made Wei Shao frustrated but he noticed that the newly arrived Qiao Man was gaining admiration from the people for her beauty and kindness. They started bringing her offerings of flowers.
There was a wall that was erected to commemorate the massacre of the Wei and the people. Three generations of Wei died during the killing including Wei Shao’s grandpa, father and brother. Wei Shao was horrified when the wall had become a symbol of veneration. It has become a praying wall. Wei Shao ordered that the wall should be taken down but the town mayor intervened. Wei Shao threatened to kill him which made Wei Shao’s reputation with the people to go even lower.
Seeing that Wei Shao was having such a hard time having anything done to the village, Qiao Man helped him out by being the bad guy. In front of everybody, she told Wei Shao that he should kill the town mayor to make an example of his treason and insubordination. The shocked Wei Shao halted killing the town mayor.
The people were appalled with Qiao Man. They thought their beautiful fairy was really an evil woman. Suddenly Wei Shao is not so bad especially when he started giving provision to the people. So he had the wall taken down and the people no longer created a fuss.
Wei Shao knew the sacrifice that Qiao Man did.
