Stuff and Dust of Us – Supernova Creation

Striking images of a young supernova abundant with fresh dust at the centre, have been captured by a telescope in the Chilean desert.

It is the first time astronomers have witnessed the genesis of the grains which formed galaxies in the early universe.

The pictures were captured by the Alma (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) radio telescope.

They were revealed at the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society.

They will be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

It is generally known now that our star the sun, our solar system, planets like our home earth and ultimately us originate  from dust grains forged in the crucible of a massive dying star called a supernova. A supernova is the biggest known explosion in nature after the Big Bang which created our universe. Such is the tremendous heat and power produced all the known elements  that make us up are created.

Space & the  universe is full of tiny solid particles we can call space dust. We can see so called dark dust lanes  in our  Milky Way  galaxy  along with  beautiful clouds in  pictures from the Hubble  and other telescopes

Dust from dead stars more so supernovae  form  dust clouds particles of dust clumps/coalesces  together  driven by static electricity attraction then gravity as  mass of these clumps increases after attracting more and more smaller clumps.   At the centre of the the clump a proto-star forms under immense pressure until nuclear fusion is triggered. Spinning and orbiting this new star  star further clumps of dust coalesce in to the planets, moons and, asteroids  debris that makes up our solar system.  Although we know this dust exists throughout the universe and galaxies, there was no firm evidence of where it actually originated from.

In today’s universe, it largely forms around dying stars as they burn out. But these fading giants were not around at the dawn of the universe.

“It’s the same problem as we have in my house – there’s a lot of dust and we don’t know where it comes from. Space is quite a messy place,” quipped Remy Indebetouw, an astronomer with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

“So we took one of the most technologically advanced telescopes ever – Alma – and tried to find out how dust formed in the early universe.”

“Supernovas have long been thought to be the creators – the bright factories that burst out building blocks for galaxies. But catching one in the act is far from easy.

“And even when we do spot a supernova cloaked in a dusty plume, there’s the old chicken-egg problem: how do we know that the cloud wasn’t there first?”

‘Not a nuisance’
To settle the argument, a team of astronomers from the UK and US used Alma to observe the glowing remains of 1987A, the closest recently observed supernova, 168,000 light-years from Earth.

They predicted that, as the gas cooled after the explosion, solid molecules would form in the centre from atoms of oxygen, carbon, and silicon bonded together.

Earlier observations of 1987A with the infrared telescope Herschel had only detected a small amount of hot dust.

But thanks to the power of the Alma radio telescope array, which stretches out over the Atacama desert, it took only 20 minutes to capture the evidence on camera.

“And all of that matter – the red area you see at the centre of the picture – was there in the core of the star before it exploded.That’s the exciting thing.

“People think of dust as a nuisance – something that gets in your way. But it turns out it’s pretty important and essential in creation.”

While supernovae signal the destruction of stars, they are also the source of new material and energy, says Dr Jacco van Loon of Keele University, a co-author on the study.

“Our lives would be very different without the chemical elements that were synthesised in supernovae throughout history,” he said.

“Grains are incredibly difficult to make in the vast emptiness of space. And if supernovae indeed make lots of them, this has very important and positive consequences for the eventual formation of the Sun and the Earth.”

 

 

 

Do we exist in reality, or are we the ultimate computer simulation?

Cogito ergo sum = I think thererfore I am” as famously uttered by Descartes as part of his Dualist philosophy.

However are we the sum of our parts with an independant mind!?

Some scientists and physicists are devising complex computer simulations to see if we ourselves and the universe surrounding us is in fact the ultimate(for us) computer simulation.

Do we actually exist in an artificially created reality  as portrayed in the 1999 movie  ‘The Matrix’?

In 2003, University of Oxford philosophy professor Nick Bostrom published a paper, “The Simulation Argument,” which argued that, “we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation.” Now, a team at Cornell University  in the US state that they have come up with a viable method for testing whether we’re all just a series of numbers in some ancient civilization’s computer game!
Researchers at the University of Washington agree with the testing method, saying it can be done. A similar proposal was put forth by German physicists in November.

So how, precisely, can we test whether we exist? Put simply, researchers are building their own simulated models, using a technique called lattice quantum chromodynamics. And while those models are currently able to produce models only slightly larger than the nucleus of an atom, University of Washington physics professor Martin Savage says the same principles used in creating those simulations can be applied on a larger scale.
“This is the first testable signature of such an idea,” Savage said. “If you make the simulations big enough, something like our universe should emerge.”

The testing method is far more complex. Consider the Cornell University explanation: “Using the historical development of lattice gauge theory technology as a guide, we assume that our universe is an early numerical simulation with unimproved Wilson fermion discretization and investigate potentially-observable consequences.”

More simply, if energy signatures in the simulations  match those in the universe at large, there’s a good chance we, too, exist within a simulation.

Towards Simulation

Interestingly, one of Savage’s students takes the hypothesis further: If we stumble upon the nature of our existence, would we then look for ways to communicate with the civilization who created us?
University of Washington student Zohreh Davoudi says whoever made our simulated universe might have made others, and maybe we should “simply” attempt to communicate with those. “The question is, ‘Can you communicate with those other universes if they are running on the same platform?'” she asked.

Before you dismiss this idea as completely loony, the reality of such a Sim Universe might solve a lot of eerie mysteries about the cosmos. About two-dozen of the universe’s fundamental constants happen to fall within the narrow range thought to be compatible with life. At first glance it seems as unlikely as balancing a pencil on its tip. Jiggle these parameters and life as we know it would have never appeared. Not even stars and galaxies. This is called the Anthropic principle.

The discovery of dark energy in the universe over a decade ago further compounds the universe’s strangeness. This sort of “antigravity” pushing space-time apart is the closest thing there is to nothing and still is something. This energy from the vacuum of space is 60 orders of magnitude weaker that what would be predicted by quantum physics.The eminent cosmologist Michael Turner ranks dark energy as “the most profound mystery in all of science.”

We are also living at a very special time in the universe’s history where it switched gears from decelerating to accelerating under the push of dark energy. This begs the question “why me why now?” (A phrase popularly attributed to Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan in 1994 when she was attacked and crippled by an opponent.)

If dark energy were slightly stronger the universe would have blown apart before stars formed. Any weaker and the universe would have imploded long ago. Its incredibly anemic value has been seen as circumstantial evidence for parallel universes with their own flavor of dark energy that is typically destructive. It’s as if our universe won the lottery and got all the physical parameters just right for us to exist.

Finally, an artificial universe solves the Fermi Paradox (where are all the space aliens?) by implying that we truly are alone in the universe. It was custom made for us by our far-future progeny.

Biblical creationists can no doubt embrace these seeming cosmic coincidences as unequivocal evidence for their “theory” of Intelligent Design (ID). But is our “God” really a computer programmer rather than a bearded old man living in the sky?

Life in the Universe: Intelligent Design and Panspermia Theories

Bombardment of  our planet from space in it’s eary history,  could organic material have hitched a ride to a primitive Earth?

It is now certain that the universe was created around 14 billion years ago via the Big Bang,  the ultimate explosion in nature which spewed out early elements such as hydrogen which is the prime element of all the stars in the universe which later became synthesised into other elements as the  stars evolved billions of years later in the expanding universe.
Our own solar system and planet Earth formed around 5 billion years ago. Earth and life being nurtured  relied  on the necessary  higher elements in chemistry’s periodic table that were forged into existence under conditions of enormous pressure and temperature created by the rare (second only to the Big Bang in size and power)  explosion(supernova) of a nearby massive star billions of years before the creation of our solar system.
Whether there was intelligent design behind the creation of our universe is a debate always raging  between the ians, ics and ists -theologians, agnostics, atheists, scientists and physicists. What became before the Big Bang is a void in our knowledge  with various learned theories vying to fill it.
Sir Fred Hoyle an eminent British scientist who worked at the frontiers of astronomy and theoretical physics published in 1983 a well-illustrated popular book for non-scientists called ‘The intelligent Universe’   in which he challenged  the whole idea that life originated and evolved on Earth and replaced it by ‘intelligent cosmic control’
In relation to the heavy element carbon so important to life and created in supernovae he said in the book
Would you not say to yourself, “Some super-calculating intellect must have designed the properties of the carbon atom, otherwise the chance of my finding such an atom through the blind forces of nature would be utterly minuscule?” Of course you would. . . . A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as with chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question“.
Hoyle proposed also another theory now becoming widely accepted that life on the newly forming earth was in all likely seeded by organic molecules or organisms contained in space debris such as meteorites and comets that collided with the primitive earth billions of years ago when such bombardments were common.   These compounds or bacteria,  helped kick start life  after arriving on earth and mixing with existing organic compounds, fermenting in the primordial soup where life ultimately originated .

Panspermia theory life seeded on planets from space

This hypothesis that life exists throughout the Universe, distributed by  meteoroids comets, asteroids planetoids etc., is called Panspermia.
Panspermia proposes that life forms that can survive the effects of space. Such organisms/bacteria that can survive in the harsh conditions of space or places on earth are known as  extremophiles. Extremophiles could have  become trapped in debris that is ejected into space after collisions between planets that harbour life,  Bacteria may travel dormant for an extended amount of time before colliding randomly with other planets or intermingling with protoplanetary disks or evolving planets If the conditions are ideal on a new planet’s surface such as having liquid water or the compounds to sustain life, the bacteria become active and the process of evolution begins. Panspermia is not meant to demonstrate how life began, just the catalyst that may cause creation.
