Whisky also known as Whiskey came from a Scottish Gaelic word which literally means “water of Life”.
It seems the name as being very appropriate according to an Irish proverb:
Whisky – Water of Life
A good gulp of hot whiskey at bedtime – it’s not very scientific, but it helps.
– Alexander D. Fleming (1881 – 1955)
Whiskey is liquid sunshine.
– George Bernard Shaw
….
The light music of whisky falling into a glass – an agreeable interlude.
– James Joyce
The water was not fit to drink. To make it palatable, we had to add whiskey. By diligent effort, I learned to like it.
