The Women going to the Sepulchre

Virgin Mary

The Women going to the Sepulchre, 1912 by Robert Anning Bell
Oil on canvas, 760 X 1270 mm

The Women going to the Sepulchre

(Just the photo to commemorate Black Saturday)

This painting is one of my all time favourites.  The composition is so beautiful.  The colours speak the language of the picture.  You can tell and feel what they were feeling at that time.  You become a part of the picture.  The frail and heartbroken Mary, Mother of Christ is leading the women to go into the tomb of Jesus a day after the crucifixion.  They carry with them oil to anoint the body of Christ.

This painting was done in 1912 by Robert Anning Bell as a Diploma Work from the very prestigious Royal Academy of Arts.
