Hotdog, Extra Juicy

I love hotdogs; especially Philippine hotdogs. It is a street food that is so yummy and so meaty. It can be fried or it can be grilled. Its taste can be further enhanced by the sauce you spread along the hotdog or you dip it into. So, so, so delicious.

I like it also eaten with lightly fried eggs and fried rice for breakfast. I have not seen hotdog, the Filipino style here in my side of London. I may have to venture farther afield where there are Specialty Filipino Stores.

Hotdogs apparently were European in origin.  But it was in America that they gained their worldwide popularity.  They were originally called frankfurters, after their place of origin in Germany.  Frankfurters was renamed Weiner when it migrated to Austria.

When it crossed the pond (Atlantic ocean) to America, it became known as dachshund sausage, due to its elongated shape.

One chilly April, during a baseball game, the vendor of the dachshund sausage was instructed to shout “Get ’em while they’re hot”.  It was selling like hotcakes that a sports cartoonist, Tad Dargon, was impressed enough to include it in a newspaper article.  He called it HOTDOG as he can’t spell dachshund! (he is not the only one) And that is the legend of the much-loved hotdog!

Talking about hotdog, there was a group or band in the Philippines that was so popular whilst I was growing up. Yes, you’ve guessed it, the band was called Hotdog and they sang one of my favourite songs ever called Manila. It is a nostalgic song about Manila wrapped in a sophisticated sentiments.

Manila
by Hotdog

Manila

I keep coming back to Manila
Simply no place like Manila
Manila, I’m coming home

I walked the streets of San Francisco
I’ve tried the rides in Disneyland
Dated a million girls in Sydney
Somehow I feel like I don’t belong

Hinahanap hanap kita Manila
Ang ingay mong kay sarap sa tenga
Mga jeepney mong nagliliparan
Mga babae mong naggagandahan

Take me back in your arms Manila
And promise me you’ll never let go
Promise me you’ll never let go

Manila, Manila
I keep coming back to Manila
Simply no place like Manila
Manila, I’m coming home

Hinahanap hanap kita Manila
Ang ingay mong kay sarap sa tenga
Mga jeepney mong nagliliparan
Mga babae mong naggagandahan

Take me back in your arms Manila
And promise me you’ll never let go
Promise me you’ll never let go

Manila, Manila
Miss you like hell, Manila
No place in the world like Manila
I’m coming home to staeey
