Episode 1
This was in 1991.
Ma Defu had just graduated from college studying agriculture and quite keen to apply his knowledge.
It so happened that the government had started an initiative of migration of poverty-stricken villages such as Ningxia Village to new locations.
Ma Defu together with Mr Zhang, a government officer, was sent to Defu’s village to convince them of the move.
They went to every household to speak with them. The poverty was such that they only had one duck left in the village.
They also went to a house where a man was still in bed when the sun had risen for quite some time already. When they asked him why he was still in bed, he was forced to say that he had nothing on, his pair of trousers was borrowed by his brother who was to go somewhere. 😝
The youngsters of the village were very unhappy.
Debao tried to run away with the other teens of the village because as Debao said just potatoes for every meal was demoralising. He was so sick of potatoes.
