Quick Precis

Cui Shiyi was betrothed to the Crown Prince almost from infancy.

To prepare her for adult life, she was sent to the Zhou manor to learn some skills.

Meeting the gorgeous general, Shengchen at the manor, her young innocent heart started pounding, and over time a mutual feeling developed between them.

But alas, Shiyi was destined to be the Crown Princess consort.

Episode 1

It was Shiyi’s birthday and she was promised by her father that he will be attending her dinner party.

But she was so upset when he did not turn up.  Instead, he came to her in the middle of the night to wish her a happy birthday (and see her before he goes away for good)

Apparently, her father, Lord Qilang, upset Empress Gao, who was now after his blood.

So to avoid execution, he had to vanish and be banished somewhere where no one knows his name.

Shiyi’s mother is his third wife who has a strong family behind her.  She was from the Cui clan and with her brother’s high official status in the palace, he was able to negotiate for a closer relationship between the Cuis and the palace. To facilitate this, it has to be through marriage.

Shiyi had to marry the Crown Prince when the time is right.

Anyway, when young Shiyi woke up the next morning, she excitedly ran to her father’s villa but her mother told her that he was gone.

Her uncle then said that she was better off without her scoundrel of a father.

Poor Shiyi could not fathom never seeing her beloved father again, she fell into a dead faint.

When she woke up, she could not speak, she became mute.

Zhou Sheng Chen, the Prince of Nan Chen had just won another victory on the battlefield.  Before he could celebrate with his army, he was informed that the Emperor had passed away.

So he decided to go back to the palace which contravenes his oath to the late Emperor. But he was so upset so he wanted to see the Emperor for the last time.

The emperor was his brother who Sheng Chen promised utter loyalty and that he will be guarding the borders and never set foot to the Central Court ever again.  And yet now he was here.

His return was widely regarded as a cause for concern to the Crown Prince/new Emperor, who was just a child.

But again Sheng Chen said that he will not make any trouble for his nephew.  He will not start a battle for the crown and to make his loyalty clear by promising to never get married or sire any child who might try to usurp the crown.

Grand Preceptor Cui then asked him for a favour to mentor his niece, who was going to be a royal bride.

Episode 2

The lonely crown prince granted his uncle Sheng Chen a battleaxe and a sword as a symbol that he is free to go anywhere including entering the palace and the court and not surrender his weapons.

Sheng Chen declined the offer which only made the child crown prince lonelier because he trusts and adores his uncle, who he might never see again as Sheng Chen promised to not set foot in the palace again.

After the funeral of the emperor, the six years old crown prince was enthroned as the new Emperor.

The Grand Empress Dowager Gao was immediately executed with her retinue of staff.

And new edict was proclaimed including the marriage of the crown prince which disappointed Grand Preceptor Cui.  He was hoping that his niece becomes an empress by marrying the Emperor rather than the new Crown Prince who is also about 6 years old.

Shiyi at this time was about 14 and was sent to NanChen mansion for training.

I have to say Allen Ren is drop-dead gorgeous in historical costume.  He looks really majestic.

Anyway, not that his nephew, the young crown prince, who is now the Emperor sent him the golden battleaxe and sword which he declined the first time.

He asked the eunuch if he could decline it again.  He was told that the Emperor especially said that he cannot by his order as the emperor.

Shiyi’s mother explained to Shengchen that Shiyi is mute and it just happened one day when her father left.

Aww, Shengchen likes Shiyi because she is sweet and quiet, never said a word.  LOL

The only thing that he founds rather offputting about her is her religious execution of manners and etiquette.  He told her to not be over courteous but she just can’t help herself.

He also does not really know what to teach her because she was not there to learn martial arts.

It is so cute.
