Never Love Unless – Thomas Campion

Never Love Unless

By Thomas Campion
 1567–1620

Never love unless you can
Bear with all the faults of man:
Men sometimes will jealous be
Though but little cause they see;
And hang the head, as discontent,
And speak what straight they will repent.
Men that but one saint adore
Make a show of love to more.
Beauty must be scorned in none,
Though but truly served in one:
For what is courtship but disguise?
True hearts may have dissembling eyes.
Men, when their affairs require,
Must awhile themselves retire;
Sometimes hunt, and sometimes hawk,
And not ever sit and talk.
If these and such-like you can bear,
Then like, and love, and never fear!
This poem is very interesting as in a few couplets it was able to tell us how a man is as a lover, the real nature of the male species when it comes to love.

I think  Campion was saying that a man can be hard to love because of his innate nature.

A man can be jealous even without reason to.  He would be rather upset with his jealousy and would apologise and be full of shame upon realising the iniquities of his unfound thoughts.

Although a man adores his girlfriend/wife/partner, his eyes will continue to wander because intrinsically a man is a connoisseur of beauty.

But it does not mean he will act on his admiration.  To him looking at beautiful women is like looking at the finer points of a masterpiece, nothing else.

A man will do anything but talk.  They would rather be doing something else than have a heart to heart.  A man is a living breathing action figure who would not choose to sit around discussing his psyche and inner feelings. 😉

So to be able to live with a man in peace and contentment, a woman must truly love him with his faults and all.

Fast forwards 21st Century
If a man is jealous even without reason to, beware he doesn’t get violent.
If a man is eyeing other women, forget it, he is a liar and a cheat.
If you wanted to talk about the relationship with your man, they are now quite savvy with their excuses and can screw you mentally
If you want to live with a man peacefully and contentedly – the first two years may be happy but by the eighth year, it is all over.  Apparently, the life span of modern marriage is 8 years currently.
