When you think of perfumes, to most women, the first thing that comes up in their mind is none other than Coco Chanel’s  Chanel No. 5.

Why did Coco called her perfume Chanel No. 5 and not number 1, 2 or 3…?  Apparently Coco’s favourite number was number 5.  So much so that the perfume was launched on 5th May (5th Month of the year) 1921.

It is such a timeless fragrance, so luxurious and expensive smelling.  It has hints of vanilla, rose and jasmine. 

 

It is quite expensive but  not the most expensive perfume in the market but it is always been a best seller.  No girl in their right mind would turn down a Chanel No 5.  Would you?  I wouldn’t!!!

When Coco Chanel was asked where one should wear perfume…

“Wherever one wants to be kissed.”

Marilyn Monroe was probably the most famous endorser of the scent.  When she was asked what she wore in bed, expecting her to say a pajama top of just the pajamas or a sexy negligée, Marilyn blurted “Chanel No. 5”.

When Coco first release the now iconic Chanel No 5, she included a secret ingredient, used by old school perfumers.  This was the addition of  musk base note gathered from the sexual pheromones of Abyssinian civet cats.  Of course the latest version now only have a synthetic musk base note.  Civet cats have not been retired as they are now used as a symbiotic apparatus for civet coffee.

 

Kalamay Pinipig Recipe

I think one of the most wonderful smell in the world is that of newly pounded pinipig. I can’t get enough of the scent of pinipig. It’s clean and comforting somehow, there is something pure and innocent about it. The smell reminded me of the book, Perfume, by Patrick Suskind. If only the anti-hero in the story of Perfume smelt pinipig, I am sure he would have not gone after all those poor virgins! LOL

I digress!

Anyway the smell is not the only thing that pinipig has got going for it, it is simply delicious as a topping to drinks and as a sweet dish.

The recipe that comes to mind immediately is Kalamay Pinipig. I have to be honest, I have never made this recipe before. I would love to try making it if I can find Pinipig in my local Southeast Asian supermarket here in London. I would certainly have a go as the recipe seems simple and easy enough but I’ll let you be the judge, please try the recipe below and kindly let me know how did it go.

Kalamay Pinipig Recipe

3 cups pinipig
1 cup sugar
4 cups rich coconut milk
Pinch of toasted anise (optional)

Rinse and drain the pinipig.

Soak in a cup of coconut milk for at least half an hour.

Boil the rest of the coconut milk with the sugar.

When the coconut milk and sugar syrup has started to thicken, add the pinipig and anise.

Stir until really thick and sticky.

Line a baking pan with banana leaves and ladle in the cooked pinipig into it. Shape it into the pan.

The kalamay pinipig is delicious topped with latik.

To make the latik

Toast one cup of coconut finely shredded with a two third of sugar in a pan.

Just keep stirring until they turned really golden brown.

For Her – Narciso Rodrigues Scent

I was reading my Glamour magazine at my desk at work when I found this perfumed flap with a sample of Narciso Rodriguez scent called For Her.

I love it instantly. It is so me. It reminds me of old days, of innocence, purity, of summer, of bathing in a warm lake, of flowery dresses, nice breeze, warm embrace, of clear sky, ripening palays, birds singing…..  It is so evocative – nostalgic.. classy in the way that Chanel No 5 is.  It has that elegant and clean smell.

OMG, I thought all of the above for just snipping For Her. I WANT THIS FOR CHRISTMAS!!!
