Pretty Man (Chinese Drama Review & Summary)

  • Genre:  Youth, School, Romance, Family
  • Release Date: 2018
  • Origin:  China; Based on a novel, which made into a webtoon.
  • Cdrama:28 episodes

Cast:

I have been watching this drama, though only the first episode is subtitled in English, so far.

Based from what I have seen on the first episode, this would be another brilliant drama, starring My Mr Mermaid lead actor, Xiong Dylan  as Lu Jin Nian.

The lead girl is played by Li Sierra.  She is Qiao An Hao who comes from an affluent family, whilst Jin Nian was a self-supporting student.

The drama started on the present day.  Lu Jin Nian is now a president of his own lucrative movie company and An Hao is a bit actress.

It then showed that they are in a relationship, though rather a complicated one.

There was a wedding photo at An Hao’s apartment.  She was setting the table for two when there was a knock on the door and here comes Jin Nian.  The atmosphere was rather awkward though it ended in bed Jin Nian intoning an apology to the absent Jia Mu.

Then back to the past…

The two young protagonists first met one rainy day.  An Hao stared at the very pretty boy, Lu Jin Nian, who ignored her.  Seeing that he was not interested in any friendly chatter, An Hao transferred her attention to a snail in the rain, she held a leaf over the snail to protect it from the rain.  This somehow captivated the rather remote Jin Nian.  Upon noticing that An Hao’s dress is stained with blood from her menstruation, he covered her with his jacket and then quickly cycled off.

The next time they met was when she was with Jia Mu (played by Xu Yi Jie).

Jia Mu, it seems, is Jin Nian half-brother.  They share the same father.

Jia Mu lives in the mansion with his mother and father.  Jin Nian on the other hand support himself; his mother had passed away.

Though he can’t forgive his father for abandoning them and letting his mother die in utter poverty, he gets on with the warm-hearted Jia Mu.

I hope the next few episodes are to be subbed soon.  Subbers out there, please translate the episodes into English.

Episode 4

It is An Hao’s birthday celebration where Jin Nian was invited.  He gave her a silver necklace with an inscription of SHMILY.

Yep, I googled what it meant.  It is an acronym of See How Much I Love You.  Did you know?  🙂

Their sweet interlude was cut short by the evil stepmom.  She denigrated Jin Nian by saying he was not good enough for An Hao being an illegitimate child and all.

Episode 5.

Major Spoiler Alert

Episode 28

After so many misunderstandings between the couple, they have finally reconciled.  Awww

Aughhhh pain

Yep it did not last long; their lovey dovishness ended abruptly.

They literally had a mother of all disappointments.

It turned out that An Hao killed his mother.  LOL

In a sepia scene during the last 3 minutes of the finale of the first season, the young girl An Hao is seen delivering a bottle of milk to Jin Nian’s house.

It was the milk that killed his mother.  What?

I know, right?!!!

Upon realising this, Jin Nian pushed An Hao away from him and walked off.

An Hao was left reeling, thinking loudly, “What just happened?”

Obviously, there will be another series for this drama to reconcile the lovebirds?  Can Jin Nian find it in his heart to forgive and forget that An Hao was instrumental in the death of his beloved mother?!!!

Comments

  1. Why doesn’t Sierra LI (Li Xirui) do on Pretty Man 2 as Meng takes her place? I just curious to ask why.

  2. I tortured myself watching this series. The torture was watching so many simple mistakes and misunderstandings.
They should have named this ‘Pretty Man Misunderstandings’..who ever did the writing needs a time out!
Although tortured I would still like to see further episodes to a proper ending. Episode 28 is not enough to satisfy an audience.

  3. Thank you for that, I totally agree with you.
I supposed it was the shock of finding out that the person he could really give his heart to was rather instrumental in the death of his mother. In his mind eyes, it was always been just his mother and himself against the world. So let’s give him a minute understanding. LOL
I hope season two is way better.

  4. This was based on the Chinese Novel “Bringing the Nation’s Husband Home.” There are too many unrealistic misunderstandings that happen, but I can’t stop watching it too (It was so bad, but I still wanted to finish it???) Tbh, I thought it was really horrible and the storyline was just way too slow. Their stupidity dragged the problems on for at least one or two episodes. While I don’t think they deserve to be single, I agree that An Hao’s agent and Jin Nian’s assistant should have had more interactions, their bickering had so much shipping potential.

In the ending, Jin Nian acted way too childishly. It wasn’t An Hao’s fault that his mother died, An Hao didn’t know what was happening, she was a child who only did as she was told by an adult whom she trusted. It was such a long time ago, and it was Han Ru Chu’s faul (again, that b**** pisses me off so much)

I’ve pasted the link below. It’s a free version, so obviously the quality of the website isn’t that good. It took me a really long time to actually finish it (there were too many chapters). The writing is a bit better than the show, but the plot is still equally, if not more, terrible and there are just too many stupid incidents and the main characters’ personalities are slightly different than the TV Drama’s.

  5. It is really the most perplexing drama. The ending is so bad but having said that I don’t think it is the worst ever because I have to confess I have watched a lot of bad dramas in the last few years.

  6. do you really think like that….. it is stupid drama, slow screenplay and i ever seen this type of stupid ending. you know there is anxiety in this…. sorry it my opinion after spending one day for watching entire show

    1. I have not heard of any news regarding a second series. Probably the powers that be will be assessing the situation shortly, considering that Pretty Man is so popular in Netflix.
Fingers crossed we will hear some news sooner rather than later.

  7. Have you heard anything about a season 2 for this? I can’t/haven’t found any information about it.

  8. I just finished the episodes. I thought this show was just eye rolling awful, yet I couldn’t stop watching it. What’s wrong with me??? I totally get that it wouldn’t be an asian drama without the misunderstandings, but seriously, it was one silly misunderstanding after another that could easily have been dealt with. They all deserve to be single. The only ones I wished would have gotten together were An Hao’s agent and Jin Nian’s assistant. I found their back and forth quibbles quite entertaining.

  9. I know! It is rather shock to the system to get an ending that is unclear, especially after investing so much time watching every episode. Unfortunately I have not heard if there is a second season but then again sometimes when you least expect it, they would release a new season. Fingers crossed, an apt conclusion will be shown soon.

  10. The last two episodes is not the ending of the show they back in their school days some vital info that wasn’t seen before there are more plots in the show business rivalry and Jia Mu mother returning so it must have a season two

  11. I’ve google it by I can’t find any entry for a confirmed season 2 just yet. According to Viki there are 30 episodes but only 28 are currently available? I hope the powers that be would released the last two or a full season 2 soon.

  12. currently I’m watching this series, Its a superb story and chemistry between Qiao An Hao
and Lu Jin Nian is also superb,
want more show with them ……….best of luck guys…love from INDIA
